Requirement 1.10 Organisational approach to environmental sustainability  The museum must be environmentally conscious. Its approach to minimising waste and reducing its effect on the environment is a matter for the governing body.  The museum must be guided by a policy statement about its approach to environmental sustainability, and that policy statement must be appropriate to its statement of purpose.

What does this mean - 1? Commitment to: Pro-actively encourage recycling on site Consider the environmental impact of any new development and event Source materials from sustainable sources Encourage visitors to use green methods of transport when they visit Buy food and other materials from local suppliers Be aware of the museum’s carbon footprint so as to be able to plan for and monitor reductions

What does this mean - 2? Active engagement and public programming to become centres of sustainable communities Museums are uniquely effective at helping us understand our complex world, by putting objects into context and stimulating curiosity

Evidence required  Information on the application form  Environmental sustainability policy statement  The approval of the policy statement by the governing body or person with delegated authority

Benefits  Save money  Access funds  Contribute to local authority objectives  Raised profile in the community  Gain new audiences  Become resilient
