Global Roads – Asia Workshop Earth Monitoring Working Group January 24, 2008

There is a dearth of openly available digital street and road data in most Asian countries.

In contrast – there is a growing abundance of satellite imagery suitable for the extraction of street and road data! See Google Earth…….

Can we assist in the development of street and road data in Asia using satellite remote sensing data?

Reference Data - Half Meter Resolution Color Orthophoto Mosaic of the Maine Coast, USA

Example of a primary road

Example of a secondary road

Example of a 3 rd level road

Primary roads and some secondary roads could be identified in NASA Landsat Geocover Orthorectified data

Roads were easier to detect in 15 meter Japan ASTER orthrectified data

Recommended Approach Ingest current decade roads data from available open sources. This forms the initial base. Process the ASTER archive in gap areas with automated road extraction algorithms (AIST GEO Grid). Establish web mapping service at to allow registered users (crowd sourcing) to add roads, label road names, add metadata and GPS tracks. Explore the possible use of high spatial resolution imagery available in virtual globes (e.g. Google Earth) to generate street / road data in urban areas (crowd sourcing). Seek funding for pilot project in Asia region. Meet to discuss progress later in 2008.
