4 Length Length – The longest measure of something or the amount that it measures from end to end. The length of the caterpillar is 6 inches. end

5 Width Width – The distance that something measures from one side to the other. The width of the caterpillar is about 2 inches side

7 Tools to measure length & width A ruler A tape measure A yard stick A ruler is made up of 12 inches. There are 12 inches in one foot. A yard stick is made up of 3 feet. Since there are 12 inches in one foot, there are 36 inches in one yard (12inches x 3 feet = 36 inches)

8 A one foot ruler is made up of 12 inches. What are all the other lines for?

9 On a ruler the numbers that are listed are the inches. There are the lines for the ¼ inch, ½ inch and ¾ inch marks, but the numbers aren’t there. 1/4 1/2 3/4
