 Jadwiga marries Duke Jagiello, forming an alliance with Lithuania  Jagiello rules from  1596: the capital is moved to Warsaw  1700s: Russia, Prussia and Austria split Poland  1890s: approximately 4 million people emigrate to the US

 Poland becomes the main fighting ground.  There was no official Polish state and there was no Polish army.  Poles were forced into the Russian, German, and Austrian armies and forced to fight against one another.  1918: Poland becomes independent as WWI comes to an end.  1997: National Assembly adopts a new Constitution
