SLAVERY United States as they existed prior to 1877

SLAVERY 1790 By the American Revolution, 20 percent of the overall population in the thirteen colonies was of African descent. The legalized practice of enslaving blacks occurred in every colony. 02/12/1793 Fugitive Slave ActFugitive Slave Act becomes a federal law. The Fugitive Slave Act voted by Congress at Philadelphia February 12 makes it illegal for anyone to help a slave escape to freedom or give a runaway slave refuge 1793 Virginia- Passage of a state law which forbids free blacks from entering the state 1804 Ohio- The legislature enacts the first of the "Black Laws" restricting the rights and movements of Blacks. Since the civil rights act of 1964, the American racial landscape has changed dramatically.

Slavery Cont. Slaves were denied an education "In Louisiana the penalty for teaching slaves to read and write is one year's imprisonment." "In North Carolina, the patrols were colored to search every negro house for books or prints of every kind. Bibles and hymn books were particularly mentioned." "Slaves are incapable of inheriting or transmitting property." (Civil Code.) Slavery exposes its victims to the fury of unrestrained passion. A master in a violent passion may fall upon his slave, and beat him unmercifully without the slightest provocation and the slave has no redress. "In Mississippi there are seventeen offenses punishable with death when committed by slaves, which, if committed by white persons, are either punished by fines or imprisonment, or punishment not provided for by the statute or at common law."
