“HOW CAN WE SUPPORT TEACHERS BY MAKING CLEARER CONNECTIONS BETWEEN ELA CURRICULUM, CCSS, TPEP AND SBAC?”

Formative Assessment Process Formative Assessment is a deliberate process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides actionable feedback that is used to adjust ongoing teaching and learning strategies to improve students’ attainment of curricular learning targets/goals.process Clarify Intended Learning Elicit Evidence Act on Evidence Interpret Evidence ~ Compiled by the Digital Library National Advisory Panel

Think – Pair – Share  How do the definition and the attributes of the formative assessment process fit with your district’s or your own definition and practice?  What is one new idea you have about the formative assessment process?

Case Studies Tom White, 4 th Grade Teacher Kristin Bailey- Fogarty, Middle School Humanities Teacher Mark Gardner, High School English Teacher Beth McGibbon, High School AP History Teacher

Save the Last Word for Me – Part 1 Roles: Timekeeper/facilitator, who keeps the process moving. The process is designed to build on each other’s thinking, not to enter into a dialogue. Timing is important; each round should last approximately 7 minutes. 1. Create a group of 4 participants. Choose a timekeeper who has a watch. 2. Each participant silently reviews their selected case study and identifies what s/he considers to be the most significant idea addressed in the article. – 8 min.

Save the Last Word for Me – Part 2  When the group is ready, a volunteer identifies the point in the article that s/he found to be most significant and reads it out loud to the group – saying nothing about why s/he chose that particular point. – 1 min.  The other 3 participants each have 1 minute to respond to that idea.  The first participant then has 3 minutes to state why s/he chose that point and to respond to his/her colleagues based on what s/he heard.  Repeat pattern until all members have had “the last word.”

Debrief Was this a useful way to explore the ideas in the text and to explore your own thinking? If so, why? If not, why not?

Break  10 minutes  Informal networking  Snacks
