OBJECTIVES 1.To gather Senior Design project ideas and internship opportunities: Relative to Space Exploration In support of the ESMD Space Grant Student Project 2. To support NASA’s Educational Framework Outcome 1: Contribute to the development of the STEM workforce

Comparison of Center Opportunities academic year there were a total of 125 Center internship opportunities the faculty had identified 253 Center internship opportunities for the academic year. This represents a 95% increase.

Comparison of Center Opportunities academic year there were a total of 39 Center Senior Design opportunities the faculty had identified 123 Senior Design opportunities for the , representing a 115% increase.

Senior Design Projects A practical design experience for Space exploration ESMD Senior Design Projects: Allow students the practical design experience of developing technologies and systems for Space exploration under the advice, guidance, and mentorship of university faculty, and NASA engineers and scientists The projects are aligned with a clear vision for exploration and serve to stretch one’s imagination for developing revolutionary technologies needed to explore our Solar system and beyond

SPACE -- A 5-step process for Faculty to address ESMD Senior Design Projects Selecting design projects Preparing Proposals for approval Addressing details of design project Communicating with NASA Executing and completing the ESMD design project Under the guidance of faculty: a) Students conduct in-depth design and development b) Frequent technical reviews, submit interim progress reports, set-up demonstrations, oral presentation, final report. Faculty contacts local Space Grant first to determine: a) SG participation in the ESMD SG Student Project b) Availability of funds If SG funded for Sen. Design, faculty need to: a) Select project from list, or propose one that is aligned with the ESMD areas ( Spacecraft, Propulsion, Lunar & Planetary Surface Systems, and Ground Operations). Faculty submit their project proposal ideas to their local Space Grant who forwards them with faculty name, , and phone numbers to Ms. Gloria Murphy and/or Ms. Susan Sawyer at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). For projects that are NOT on the NASA list: a) SGs must submit the University’s proposal to Gloria Murphy at KSC. b) KSC management will inform SG of the approval status. c) KSC is responsible for establishing contact between the faculty and the NASA POC. Faculty work with KSC management & NASA POC set teleconferences and/or videoconferences with faculty and the University’s Senior Design team for design reviews, and final evaluation of the project. Students and faculty join PBMA to contribute to the community of practice. Faculty decide on student involvement, timelines, milestones, metrics for student performance evaluation, and advisory oversight that will ensure successful outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS The ESMD Space Grant Faculty Project: 1.Bridges the gap between academia and the Nation’s vision for Space Exploration. Students connect to real- World Space-related work. 2. Exposes students to new and novel approaches to Space exploration that better prepare them for future Space- related careers. 3.Creates greater awareness of current NASA research to new faculty who have never been previously associated with or exposed to the NASA vision and mission. 4. Motivates incorporation of Space related curriculum into higher education institutions to increase the training and knowledge base of graduating students.

ESMD SG Faculty Project 2008 Faculty Opportunities at NASA Centers Spend 5 weeks at a NASA Center ARC, DFRC, GRC, GSFC, JSC, JPL, KSC, LaRC, MSFC, or SSC Program Dates: June 2 - July 2, 2008 $7500 stipend plus travel allowance (JPL and ARC stipend $8500 due to locality) Collect information to help NASA and the Space Grant Consortia identify future ESMD-related internship opportunities and senior design courses All selected faculty will travel to KSC July 14-17, 2008 to consolidate agency findings All Applicants must be US citizens Deadline for application: January 11, 2008 To apply go to The community password ishttps://secureworkgroups.grc.nasa.gov/esmd-sg-fp ESMD Faculty.
