Welcome to MathSoc! Your undergraduate student society

What is MathSoc? We officially represent the interests of all undergraduate mathematics students to the Faculty and the University. We also offer a wide variety of services and hold social events.

Who is MathSoc? Every undergraduate math student is a member of MathSoc! The high-level operation of the society is entrusted to elected executives each term. For Fall 2014, your executives are: – Lauren Hurley – President – Ty Rozak – Vice President, Operations – Nancy Yang – Vice President, Events – Kevin Shi – Vice President, Academics – Anthony Liu – Vice President, Finances

Services MathSoc provides lots of services to all of its members. These range from academic services such as the Exam Bank to planning events to renting out lockers.

MathSoc Office Located in MC Printing for 10c/page, Photocopying for 5c/page. Sale of stationary, calculator and novelty clothes and items. Board games and textbooks for rent. Tons of others!

Calculators If you wish to use an calculator on any math exam (assuming calculators are allowed for that exam), it MUST be “Pink Tie Approved”, this means it must be an approved model. The MathSoc office sells “Pink Tie Approved” calculators (the cheapest on campus). We can also approve your calculators in the office.

Novelties The MathSoc Office also sells many novelty items to help you show off your math pride. T-shirts, sweatpants, bags, shot glasses, sweatshirts and more!

Exam Bank An online repository of past midterm and final exams. Easy to access and download. A great resource for studying. Visit mathsoc.ca to visit the Exam Bank

Lockers Free to sign out for the entire term. In MC, close to tons of classrooms. Visit mathsoc.ca to sign out a locker starting September 15 th

The Comfy Lounge The Comfy Lounge is a huge room on the 3 rd floor of MC with lots of comfy couches. Open 24/7. Perfect for relaxing between classes. It is also often used to hold events.

Math Coffee and Donut Shop Some of the cheapest food and drinks available on campus! Located beside the Comfy lounge on the 3 rd floor of MC. Open 8am – 7pm on weekdays. Newly Renovated! A great group study place.

mathNEWS mathNEWS is a bi-weekly student publication. Issues are distributed around MC and DC every other Friday. Write for mathNEWS by attending production meetings every other Monday.

Events MathSoc holds a variety of events each term. It is a great way to meet your fellow math students. Some events for this term: – Charity Ball – Halloween – 314 th Day of the Year – Oktoberfest – Pints with Profs – Bi-weekly games nights

Clubs Each academic program has a student club that organizes academic and social events for their members. A great way to get to know people in your program.

MathSoc Council MathSoc Council is the governing body of the society. They make decisions about funding, administration and other important issues. Council is comprised of up to 30 elected representatives, distributed between academic programs, and the 5 executives.

First Year Representatives As new students, you may have different concerns than upper years. The first-year representatives on Council represent the entire new class, regardless of program, for 8 months. You can expect to commit between 3- 5 hours every other week.

FY Rep Elections The first step is to get an application form from outside of the MathSoc Office. Next, you will have to get at least 5 other first years to endorse your nomination by signing that form. After getting the appropriate amount of signatures, you can submit the form to the MathSoc Office. This must be done before the nomination period is over on Friday, September 19th at 4:00pm.

FY Rep Elections Since there are only 5 seats for First Years and more than 5 may apply, you will have to campaign in an election. This campaign period runs from Wednesday, September 17th to Wednesday, September 24 th. Voting will take place on Thursday, September 25th and Friday, September 26th at mathsoc.ca.

Getting Involved There are plenty of ways to get involved other than Council as well! There are a variety of volunteer and leadership positions available: – Directors – Office Volunteers – Committee Members – Clubs

Directors Directors are the heart of the society and are the ones who make things happen. You can expect to commit several hours weekly. Application forms can be found online at mathsoc.uwaterloo.ca/apply. They describe the positions available in more depth.
