Background ▪ Background –8-stream MIMO should support extremely high spectral efficiency (above 30 bps/Hz) Difficult tradeoff between pilot overhead and throughput –8-stream MIMO should operate under very high SINR ▪ 8-stream MIMO should target indoor hotspot communication environments –Low mobility and short channel delay spread Possible to reduce pilot density –AMSs are near to ABS ▪ According MIMO DG, members agree that if number of streams is larger than 4, ABS is only allowed to transmit data via CRUs –Pilots of adjacent PRUs can be jointly utilized for channel estimation In each PRU, number of pilots can be reduced

8-Tx Pilot Patterns ▪ Example of 8-Tx pilot pattern –Each stream has two pilots Possible to achieve extremely high throughput under indoor hotspot scenario

Simulation Results (1/3) ▪ Comparative pilot patterns Pattern 1Pattern 2Pattern 3

Simulation Results (2/3) ▪ Simulation parameters –8x8 spatial multiplexing MMSE detector to recover source symbols –Channel model Indoor hotspot channel (table 18 of EMD) –Channel estimator: 2D-MMSE Optimized to predefined velocity speed 3 km/hr Optimized to predefined channel delay spread 1 us Pilots of 2 CRUs are jointly used for channel estimation –Power boosting: 5 dB –5 MCS levels QPSK ½, QPSK ¾, 16QAM ½, 16QAM ¾, 64QAM 2/3

Simulation Results (3/3) ▪ Indoor hotspot channel with velocity 3 km/hr Throughput performanceLoss over best

Conclusion ▪ Impractical to use 8-stream MIMO in conventional cellular communication scenario –Hard to achieve high throughput since pilot overhead should be large and high SINR is difficult to achieve –It’s suggested to make 8-steam MIMO focus on indoor hotspot scenario ▪ Under the indoor hotspot scenario, pilot pattern 3 has the best throughput performance

Text proposal ▪ Pilot Patterns The pilot patterns for eight pilot streams are shown in Figure 406 with the subcarrier index increasing from top to bottom and the OFDM symbol index increasing from left to right. Subfigure (a) in Figure 406 shows the pilot pattern for eight pilot streams in subframe with six OFDM symbols; Subfigure (b) in Figure 406 shows the pilot pattern for eight pilot streams in subframe with five OFDM symbols; Subfigure (c) in Figure 406 shows the pilot pattern for eight pilot streams in subframe with seven OFDM symbols.
