NEEDS OF LIVING THINGS

Four Basic Needs Living things must satisfy their basic needs for energy, water, living space, and stable internal conditions.

ENERGY Food is an organism’s energy source Autotroph/producer = make their own food Auto = self troph = feeder Heterotrophs/consumers = cannot make their own food. Hetero = other

WATER Must have H2O to survive Dissolves more chemicals than any other substance on Earth 92% of blood is water Organisms will survive only a few days without H2O

LIVING SPACE All organisms need a place to live, obtain food and H2O, and find shelter Space on Earth is limited so organisms must compete

STABLE INTERNAL CONDITIONS Organisms must keep conditions inside their body stable despite environmental changes
