Baroque Late 16 th Century to Early 18 th Century

Baroque c. late 1500s– early 1700s The Baroque style in Europe is characterized by an emphasis on the dramatic. Themes include scenes from history and religious stories. There are many portraits of royal families from this time period. The modern pencil was invented.

Dutch Paintings and artists Important Dutch artists include Rembrandt, Hans Holbien, the Younger and Vermeer who specialized in portraits and scenes from everyday life. Portraits became popular because there was the rise of a wealthy middle-class which wanted their images painted. (Remember this is before photography) They were masters at perspective and realism.
