His first masterpiece… Vincent first worked with his uncle as an art dealer. This is where he visited museums and began learning more about art. In the late 1870’s he pursued religious studies, wanting to fight poverty. His religious teachings started in a mining town. Vincent painted the miners, is known for The Potato Eaters is known for being his first masterpiece.
Oh, Brother! Vincent’s brother Theo helped him out financially ($$$) while working in the mining town. Vincent would end up receiving help from his brother Theo for the rest of his life.
Self Portrait 1889 After moving in with his brother Theo in Paris, Vincent was introduced to Impressionist artists. This self portrait was painted during one of Vincent’s depressions.
Impressionism vs. Post- Impressionism Inspiration from Impressionists! Impressionism is a style of painting originating in France around 1875 emphasizing effects of light on color. Vincent became very ill with a condition characterize by anxiety, agitation, mental dysfunction, and disturbed behavior. Under the care of doctors Vincent produced more than 80 paintings in June and July of His death occurred at the age of 37, his brother Theo couldn’t handle the loss – he passed away the next year. Vincent worked as an artist for 10 years and produced 1600 paintings and drawings.
