The following lesson is addressing these standards: Use problem-solving approaches to explore and construct meaning from mathematical content. (MO 1.6, 3.4, 3.5, 3.7) Examine problems and proposed solutions from multiple perspectives. (MO 3.6) PROBLEM SOLVING

Teacher Tips You will need to click the mouse to show the answers for activities. This will allow you to control the timing of answers shown. We suggest that students keep a journal. It is critical for students to use writing skills to explain their answers. Please take time to discuss possible solutions to problems.

Mr. Cross decided to hire the twins to rake his yard, front and back, for $6.00. It was a large yard, but the front and back were about the same size.

Bill was not home from school so Bob started alone. Bob finished the whole front before Bill showed up.

The two of them raked the back together. How should they split the money?

They could each get $3.00 as agreed on with Mr. Cross. Or Should they divide the money according to the amount of work each did? How would you determine this?
