TODAY’S OBJECTIVES 10/30/2013 You will be able to: Collaborate with peers to create analysis questions based on “Cask” Homework: Be prepared to educate peers on questions for tomorrow’s class

SOME TERMS & CLARIFICATION Tuberculosis VS. FOUND IN THE STREET Poe: helped to define the short story, and his dark imagination helped establish the genre of horror literature Catacombs: Underground tunnels that house tombs. Long, complex passageways that stretch out like cities of the dead. Surrounded by bones…

TODAY’S OBJECTIVES 10/30/2013 You will be able to: Create literary analysis questions about “Cask” w/ connections to character, dialogue, and point of view Homework: “Cask” Quiz FRIDAY

YOUR JOB FOR TODAY You will need: Your book Notes section

TODAY’S OBJECTIVES 10/31/2013 HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! You will be able to: Correctly identify answers to literary analysis questions Focus on & make connections between character, dialogue, and point of view in “Cask” Homework: “Cask” Quiz tomorrow

Characterization Montresor: Insulted= seeks revenge Calculating in his decision making and will not risk his own life Uses fortunato’s fondness for wine against him Wearing a mask of black silk, invites fortunato to his catacombs: secretly to kill him. Amontillado = bait PLAN: -sends servants away to the carnival -as the vaults are covered in (Nitre) mineral = what causes Fortunato to cough -seeks the wine and too driven by pride to turn back: this works in Montresor’s favor

Characterization Fortunato: Multicolored costume of the jester, including a cone cap with bells (significance?) F. wants to confirm it is amontillado and sees luchesi as a threat – hence why he obsesses over being the one to go with montresor F is a mason and M claims he is as well – f wants proof. M shows him his trowel/tool – to say a stonemason Fortunato claims that montresor must be jesting (joking)

Dialogue An important aspect to consider: the dialogue between Montresor and the reader (although he does all the talking) VS. Montresor and Fortunato’s dialogue: What is Montresor hiding?

P.O.V. & Unreliable narrator “No one attacks me with impunity” Montresor claims at the end that his heart feels sick because of the dampness of the catacombs It is 50 years later that he tells the story…but remembers it all too well Punishment without proof – does fortunato deserve to die? Montresor uses his judgment of fortunato and becomes the executioner = causes him to be unreliable Because montresor confesses this story 50 years after its occurrence – the passing of time, events, and narrative overall become more unreliable*** His unreliability as a narrator overrides any potential for any rational consideration

A person can become so obsessed with revenge that he or she descends into madness and commits unspeakable acts
