Introduction Storytelling is a vital part of Native American culture. In this quest, you will research a Native American tribe of North Carolina and become familiar with terminology associated with your tribe. You will use these words to create your own Native American style story.

Task Search the following links to Native Americans of North Carolina web sites to find words conveying the spirit of Native American storytelling. Create an ABC organizer with these words and then write a Native American story using as many of the words as possible. As a group, you will present your story to the class.

Process This quest is designed to be completed over a weeks period. You will have time each day to complete your task. Read all directions before you click. Activity 1: In assigned groups of four, choose to research one of the following tribes: Cherokee, Lumbee, or Catawba. Activity 2: Click on the icon for your tribe. Read and learn. Cherokee Lumbee Catawba Activity 3: Click once on the icon. Print the ABC chart. Go back to the sites above to choose words that specifically relate to your tribe to place in the ABC chart. Activity 4: Click on this link to observe a Native American storyteller. Pay close attention to gestures and voice changes. Print the rubric at this link as your guide. The rubric will tell you the number of words and the length of the story. Now, go to your seats and create your own Native American story using words from the ABC chart.
