Website Evaluation ‘As you sit here listening to this presentation, the internet is growing!’ By: Christopher Bell copyright 2007

Internet Growth How Fast is it growing? There isn’t a definite answer! To give you an idea, when Bill Clinton was inaugurated as President there were 200 domain hosts in use (200 numeric addresses in use and only eight (8) of them ended in.com or.net! As of January 1, 2004 there were 194,000,000 domain hosts in use. Web is growing by more than 10,000,000 new, static pages each day. In contrast, the fastest growing search engine database is increasing at about 10% of this pace.

What’s the Problem? Accuracy! Quality! Efficiency!

WE have a New Problem The information is there, but locating accurate information has become more difficult.

What does this mean for you and Me? We are now instructors in search tactics! We are evaluation gurus WE are the ‘One Stop Shop’ for information.

There are lots of tools out there. Kathy Schrock OWL Website LibraryInstruction.com Microsoft The Big 6

This is what I do. A.Brief explanation of why be critical of websites. B.Give some real-world examples of why it is important to think about the accuracy of a resource. C.Proctor the CVHS Pre-Test for ‘Critical Evaluation of Websites’ D.Solicit student opinions as a group on the Accuracy of the websites. E.Discussion: (Record on an easel or white board) 1)Begin with what questions did you ask yourself to answer the questions? 2)Tell them the steps that you take when evaluating a website. 3)Discuss each website on the test and apply the questions that you listed as a group. F.Have students navigate to ‘Kathy Schrock’s Website Evaluation Guide’ - You could use whatever you feel is the proper tool. G.Explain that this is a very thorough tool and walk students through this process with a website the students suggest. H.I always tell them that this is a very thorough process and remind them that researcher decides how thorough they want to be when evaluating resources.

Resources The CVHS Library has all of these tools! ibrary/
