stophazing.org University of Central Florida: Hazing Prevention and Education Hazing Prevention Consortium Summit June 11-12, 2015 University of Maine

stophazing.org Campus Hazing Assessment Findings Students believe that hazing is a “non-issue” at UCF even though there is a perception hazing has happened in the past Students may know that hazing exists but do not feel that they have the power to intervene Students rarely articulate an understanding of the coercive power dynamics involved in hazing and have difficulty defining and recognizing the full spectrum of hazing behaviors. Most often students do not report hazing because see it as norm or do not see the harm that it causes There were no faculty and staff professional development/training on campus related to hazing prevention

stophazing.org Hazing Prevention Core Strategies Coalition-building- (Hazing Prevention and Education Committee, Florida SUS Coalition) Training for Student Organization Advisors, Athletic Coaches, Residence Life Staff, Student Leaders, etc. (Faculty and Staff: Student Affairs Presentations, Faculty Presentations, Webinars, SUS Yearly conference /NASPA State Drive-In) (Students: National Hazing Prevention Week Sessions, Online Hazing Module Soft Launch, Leadership Week Social norms messaging ( Video from student leaders on website) Visible campus leadership statement re: anti-hazing (video on campus website from Vice- President) Policy and protocol reviews (coalition review campus policies and update website) Bystander Intervention ( Student Health Promotions, Victim, Services, and UCF Cares have incorporated education about azing in their presentations) Communication to broader campus community (e.g., alumni, family and parents) ( Orientation, website, promotional items)

stophazing.org Evaluation Case Study Activities Training for Student Organization Advisors, Athletic Coaches, Residence Life Staff, Student Leaders, etc. ( Online Hazing Module Soft Launch, Leadership Week)

stophazing.org Evaluation Case Study Findings & Evidence Base Executive Summary Attitude, knowledge, awareness, and intent to change behavior all showed positive increases 82% reported awareness and knowledge increased There was a 40% increase in those who would report a hazing incident 70% feel more empowered to be part of the solution 78% are less inclined to take part in hazing

stophazing.org Hazing Prevention Lessons Learned - tighter evaluation and assesment
