History of The Crucible In 1952 Elia Kazan (a friend of Miller’s who directed his play Death of a Salesman) was called before the HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee) headed by Senator Joseph McCarthy –Under fear of being blacklisted from Hollywood, Kazan named 8 people from the Group Theatre that had been a part of the Communist Party along with him Miller talked to Kazan about his experience then he went to Salem, Massachusetts to research the witch trials The Crucible first appeared on stage in January After it’s release, HUAC “investigated” Miller and even took away his passport. He couldn’t attend the London opening of his play in 1954.

More on Miller’s Life Eventually the case against Miller was overturned and HUAC reissued Miller his passport. The Crucible is an allegorical play and it likens the situation with the House Un-American Activities Committee to the witch hunts in Salem Miller’s experience with HUAC affected him throughout his life.
