What is an Animal? 6 th Grade Notes pgs Symmetry Foldable

Do Now Together (with your lab group) Name whether the following animals are invertebrates or vertebrates.  Sponge  Dog  Horse  Worm  Scallop  Squid  Robin  Jellyfish  Dolphin

Objectives Students will  Identify the characteristics of animals  Differentiate between vertebrates and invertebrates  Explain how symmetry of animals differs  *Review vocabulary index cards

Animal Characteristics (pg.498) CharacteristicsStatements Cells Nucleus and organelle Obtaining Energy Digesting Food Movement

Symmetry  Symmetry refers to the arrangement of the individual parts of an object that can be divided into similar halves. 3 Types of Symmetry  Radial  - Body parts arranged in a circle around a central point  -Examples: jellyfish, sea urchins and sea anemone

Symmetry  Bilateral  -Body parts that are nearly mirror images of each other. A line can be drawn down the center of their bodies to divide them into two equal parts.  -Examples: Grasshoppers, Lobsters and humans  Asymmetrical  -Body parts that cannot be divided into similar halves  -Example: sponges

Animal Classification  Invertebrates are animals that do not have backbone. About 97% of all animals are invertebrates. Groups of Invertebrate Animals CnidariansRoundwormsAnnelidsEchinoderms SpongesFlatwormsMollusksArthropods

For Next Time…  Self Check Questions #1-3 pg. 500 in science notebook due Monday.  Test signed by tomorrow homeroom (last chance!)  Bats presentation tomorrow at 9am with Mr. Anderson
