Climate Change: A Challenge for Europe and Cyprus 27 th - 29 th November 2009 Goethe Center Nicosia Global Warming Global warming is mainly the result of CO 2 levels rising in the Earth’s atmosphere. CO 2 level in the atmosphere has reached to almost 400 ppm. The upper safety limit for atmospheric CO 2 is 350 parts per million (ppm). Atmospheric CO 2 levels have stayed higher than 350ppm since early 1988.

Climate Change: A Challenge for Europe and Cyprus 27 th - 29 th November 2009 Goethe Center Nicosia Fossil Fuel Consumption Fossil fuel consumption has a significant role in global warming. Oil consumption is responsible for 45% of CO2 emissions. More than half of the total oil consumption is used in transport. Coal, Oil, Natural gas is used for electricity generation. We use coal, oil, natural gas, and electricity in industry, building space heating and the like. All these contribute to CO2 emissions.

Climate Change: A Challenge for Europe and Cyprus 27 th - 29 th November 2009 Goethe Center Nicosia Existing Situation is Not Sustainable EU has already committed to reduce green house gas emissions by at least %20 by This is known as by 2020 EU climate action. There are many programs that will help to achieve this target mainly by using energy more efficiently and switching renewable energy sources. Intelligent Energy Europe is one of the main EU sustainable energy programs.

Climate Change: A Challenge for Europe and Cyprus 27 th - 29 th November 2009 Goethe Center Nicosia Sustainable Energy Use in Transport Good city planning, distributing the city centers and market places and restructuring of the road infra structure to promote Public transformation, providing safe routes for bicycle riding and walking. Establishing adequate school bus systems and prohibiting parents to transport their children to schools. Car pooling Reducing speed limits. Promoting energy efficient vehicle use CO2 emission per kilometer, hybrid cars by subsidy and taxation policies. Planning working hours for different groups with time lags to reduce traffic jams.
