2 What they do… They meet with producers and performers to determine the right sound for an event. They set up and test recording equipment and take down equipment when a performance is over. 4 Skills… Sound engineers must have computer networking and software skills. They must be able to control, maintain, and repair equipment systems. They must be able to listen closely to regulate and mix sounds. They must be able to problem-solve to identify problems and find solutions. 5 Tools… Sound engineers use: –Computers –Microphones –Connecting Cables –Mixing Boards –Amplifiers –Speakers –Duplicating equipment UNT in partnership with TEA, Copyright © All rights reserved.

6 Working conditions… Most sound engineers work indoors in studios. Sometimes they have to work outdoors, away from the studio, in all kinds of weather. Sound engineers who set up and take down equipment may have to do heavy lifting. They often work more than 40 hours a week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. 7 Training… Some positions require a 4-year degree in radio and television. Many positions require vocational or technical school training in broadcasting, electronics, or computer networking. 9 Income… Incomes for sound engineers range from $21,000 to $100,000 with the average income approximately $65,000 per year. Overall employment is expected to grow 17%, which is faster than average.
