US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS NORTHWESTEN DIVISION PORTLAND, OREGON WELCOME BY COL. FASTABEND Division Commander

USACE Divisions and Districts

WELCOMING REMARKS Welcome to the Northwestern Division. We cover 12 States; 1 st and 2 nd largest river systems in the US: Missouri and Columbia Rivers (1 million mi 2 drainage). Two regional offices; and 5 districts. Major programs: environmental projects, military operations, and water resources. Dams are operated for flood control, power, fish, navigation, recreation, irrigation, water quality, and others. 29 major hydropower plants on Columbia, Snake, and Missouri rivers. Total installed capacity of 15,568 MW – 76% of Corps total. Annual power generation: 75 million MWh. 82 flood control projects (22 on Columbia, 53 on Missouri). 115 Maf of flood storage (141 km 3 ). Inland waterways: 992 mi (Columbia), 735 mi (Missouri). 10 locks (8 on Columbia/Snake).

COLUMBIA RIVER VISITOR PROGRAM One and ½ day briefing on water management and related subjects. One ½ day visit to typical Lower Columbia River run-of-the-river project -- Bonneville Dam. Speakers from Corps, Bonneville Power Administration, National Weather Service, and Port of Portland. We have a few water management lessons learned to share: Columbia River comparable to the Zambezi River (1, 950 km vs. Zambezi’s 2,740 km) International (there are pluses and minuses) We have had flooding problems (rain/snow –not tropical cyclones) Projects operated for flood control, power, fish, navigation and other purposes. Many challenging issues. Learn from our experience; use the tools that work for you. We would be glad to help –where we can.
