Characterization Notes

characterizationthe way a writer creates the personality of a character. When a writer will simply tell readers that a character is amusing, evil, dull, brave, etc., it is called direct characterization. Literary Elements Most often, though, writers will use indirect characterization to reveal the personality of characters. Indirect characterization is when The author shows us the personality traits rather than tells us.

Indirect characterization through the words of the character through the characters thoughts and feelings through comments made about the character by other characters in the story through the characters actions and behaviors An author will reveal information about his or her characters…

When a writer uses indirect characterization, we must use our own judgment to decide what the character is like, based on the evidence the writer gives us.
