Fundemental Techniques for Handling People & Leadership Basics

 Objective: Discuss and understand Carnegie’s “Three Principals for Handling People” and their application to becoming a leader. ◦ Principle 1: Don’t criticize, condemn, or complain ◦ Principle 2: Give honest and sincere appreciation ◦ Principle 3: Arouse in the other person an eager want

 How can we effectively do this?  What lessons can we learn from those who don’t follow this rule?  Why is this principle important? Is it?

 What is the difference between honest and sincere and dishonest and insincere appereciation?  How can you do this every day to make it a habit?  Why is this principle important? Is it?

 What are the advantages of doing this?  What characteristics of personality might help you do this more?  Why is this principle important? Is it?

 Objective: Define, discuss, and understand the essentials of leadership and their application.  How do you define leadership? ◦ What should a leader do? ◦ What should a leader NOT do?  What is the difference between a leader and a leader in title? ◦ What do titles actually mean? ◦ Are they important?  What is servant-leadership? ◦ Is being a servant-leader important? ◦ What separates a servant leader from other types of leader?

What makes a good leader?  Inspiration “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” – Jane Goodall  Being an example “Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing.” – Albert Schweitzer  Helping others “No one has ever become poor by giving.” – Anne Frank “You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” - John Bunyan  Caring and love “I can only love you most when I love me best.” – Steven Maraboli “No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care” - Theodore Roosevelt  Patience “Trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit.” - Moliere  Persevere “If you’re going though hell, keep going” – Winston Churchhill  Empathy “When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” - Ernest Hemingway “I do not ask the wounded person how he feels, I myself become the wounded person.” - Walt Whitman

What should a leader NOT do?  Always criticize “He has a right to criticize, who has a heart to help.” - Abraham Lincoln  Force corporal punishment  Belittle “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” – Mark Twain “Isn't it kind of silly to think that tearing someone else down builds you up?” - Sean Covey  Tease/Bully  Gossip “Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people.” –Socrates  Complain Complaining does not work as a strategy. We all have finite time and energy. Any time we spend whining is unlikely to help us achieve our goals. And it won't make us happier.” – Randy Pausch  Be insubordinate There is a fine line between insubordination and disagreement  Quit “Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever” – Lance Armstrong  Fear or trying to stop change “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” – Maya Angelou “You are either going forward or going backwards, staying the same is the same as going backwards.” – Who said this?

 What does a title mean? NOTHING… Until you earn it  Are they important? No!!! Until they mean something  You’re the __________ now… so what!

 Define servant-leadership ◦ Flipping what you think about leadership. You are on the bottom and those you lead are more important than you. ◦ You are a leader specifically to help those you lead. ◦ You only lead inasmuch as you help others  "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." – John Quincy Adams  "True leadership must be for the benefit of the followers, not to enrich the leader." – John Maxwell  "My research debunks the myth that many people seem to have... that you become a leader by fighting your way to the top. Rather, you become a leader by helping others to the top. Helping your employees is as important, and many times more so, than trying to get the most work out of them." – William Cohen

 How do you become a servant-leader?  What are some other forms of leadership? Do they work?  How can you start applying this now?
