Project aims To understand how students work collaboratively in wikis –Wikis are considered an enabler of collaborative learning and group work, thereby encouraging students to engage in learning processes and outcomes and in flexible learning environments. To promote and further develop the University’s GQ4 ‘a graduate can work both autonomously and collaboratively as a professional’, with specific emphasis on developing the concept of ‘working collaboratively’ using wikis

Methodology Qualitative approach – collecting information to find out current T&L practices of using wikis Survey instruments were designed using both closed and open questions –TellUS survey questionnaires administered over 2 semesters Student (70 respondents) Staff (5 respondents)

Student survey Key areas of investigation included: The types of activities offered to prepare students for the wiki project The use of the wiki in the students’ teaching and learning The experiences of students when using the wiki as a platform for collaboration The learning outcomes resulting from the use of the wiki How the wiki was assessed The students’ likes and dislikes of using the wiki Suggestions of how wikis could be better used

Staff survey Key areas of investigation included: The rationale for using the wiki in course design The types of activities used to prepare staff and students for a wiki project The success of the wiki as a platform for collaboration The usefulness of a wiki as a teaching tool The learning outcomes that resulted from use of the wiki How the wiki was assessed The likes of dislikes of using the wiki Suggestions of ways wikis could be better used in course design
