Capstone- Teaching with Common Core in a school garden. By: Susan Spigelmire

Problem  Teachers do not know how to create new Common Core lessons using the school garden.

Audience  All TK-5 grade teachers at Harvest Valley Elementary  The teachers vary in ages, technology use, education, and knowledge of gardening.

Solution  Create a learning module to teach teachers of different grade levels how to use the garden to teach different common core standards.  Provide example lessons and the discuss the standards they address.  Discuss the new Common Core standards

Methods/Procedures  Needs analysis to see what subjects teachers are most interested in using the garden to teach.  Learner analysis to find out more about the target audience.  Research the Common Core standards for those subjects and grade levels.  Creating/testing the learning module.

Learning Theories  Gagne’s nine steps of instruction  Cognitive theory-scaffolding, direct instruction with guided practice, use different types of media to reach all learners.

Final Deliverable  An interactive website that teachers can select a subject and their grade level to learn about different things that can be taught in a school garden.  Sample lessons and how they are linked to the Common Core Standards.

Completed so far  Needs analysis  Some research

Challenges  Starting fresh with a new idea  Getting teachers to test the learning module in a timely manner
