Day 4 – Prepositions and Annotations

Objectives Understand the importance and usage of prepositional phrases. Analyze a work of fiction for author’s point of view and understand the connotation v. denotation. Warm Up Copy the sentence and cross out all prepositional phrases. Next, construct 2 sentences of your own about zombies. You must use at least 5 prep phrases in each sentence. 1. Throughout the movie, the zombies with the infectious virus walked slowly after the three normal humans.

Independent Work Review your notes from yesterday and have your prepositions list out on your desk. Identify the Prepositional phrases in the first 10 sentences. Put parenthesis around the prepositional phrase. Label the preposition(P)and the object of the preposition (OP).

Preposition Pair work Work with your assigned partner. Complete the worksheet by identifying the prepositions (P) and the objects of the prepositions (Op). Make sure you put the prep. phrase in parenthesis ( ).

My cat sleeps during the day, then prowl at night. 15. Before the game, the officials explained the rules. 16. The water leaked through the dam and spread across the fields. 17. Mother treated her fragile china with great care. 18. I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee. 19. The manuscript was hidden among a stack of papers. 20. I found a wallet without any identification in it.

21. It rained hard during the night. 22. The boy climbed carefully up the tree. 23. Mary and Betty were the best golfers on the team. 24. I’d like a red jacket like yours. 25. Our basketball team will play against yours tonight. 26. They lived in Wisconsin across the state line. 27. The gift was placed inside a beautifully decorated box. 28. Partner Expectations Always stay on task. Only talk about current topic. Be attentive and helpful. Pull your own weight. If these cannot be met, we cannot work in pairs.

Partner Reading Get into your pairs. Read and annotate “The Time Factor.” Read together and annotate your own copy of the passage. Focus on author’s purpose when annotating. Remember, do not only highlight. When you are finished, answer the three discussion questions on the back. Your answers must be in complete sentences.

Planning ahead is a measure of class. The rich and even the middle class plan for future generations, but the poor can plan ahead only a few weeks or days. What does Steinem say about class? Do you agree with Steinem’s view of the relationship between time and class?

Constructed Response Write a constructed response analyzing the first paragraph of “The Time Factor.” Do you agree with Steinem’s view of the relationship between time and class? Your response must be at least one paragraph. It must include: 1. Thesis: Introductory Statement identifying the main point 2. Reference Detail I 3. Elaboration, Signification, Explanation 4. Reference Detail II 5. Elaboration,Significance, Explanation 6. Synthesis: Conclude by connecting all ideas. You may discuss this with your partner but you must write your own copy
