What are some differences between High School and College? 5

Core Values at IVCC Responsibility Caring Honesty Fairness Respect 6

Responsibilities Be on time and prepared for class Read your assignments and do any homework Manage your own time and pay attention to deadlines Be respectful of classmates and instructors Turn off your cell phone and stop texting You are an adult—we expect that you will act like one in class 7

Rights To be treated with respect by classmates and instructors To receive a quality education To have opportunities for learning both inside and outside of the classroom To have options for financing your education and your materials/supplies/books To ask your instructors for assistance and to review your grades 8

FERPA … another RIGHT Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act College students are considered adults under the law and have privacy rights from this law No educational record information (i.e. grades) can be shared with anyone without written consent of the student - this includes parents Grades, transcripts, etc. will only be released if there is a signed release form completed and on file in the Admissions and Records Office (each semester) For an instructor to talk to the parent, an additional form must be signed and given to the instructor for each class 9

Disability Services If you had an IEP in high school…. You have the right to accommodations to be successful in your courses You have a responsibility to make the first contact with the Disability Services Office You have the right to not self-identify, but we can’t help without it Contact Tina Hardy in the Disability Services Office (815) if you would like to talk to her about your learning and how she can help 10

What are you going to do after IVCC? Transfer to complete a Bachelors Degree? Look at the AA or AS sheet for now Earn an Applied Associate Degree and go to work? Look at a purple guide sheet Earn a Certificate and go to work? Look at a blue guide sheet Not sure yet—let us help! 11

Transfer Students Your Counselor will talk to you about what your goals are and where you might want to go Start looking at the AA or AS degree— explore which classes sound interesting to start with? Your Counselor will likely select a tan color sheet -this sheet has information about the specific major and which colleges offer the major and their specific requirements The more you know, the better we can help you! If you are unsure or torn between 2 schools, let your Counselor know! 12

AAS and Certificate Students These programs have very specific courses you must complete in each semester These programs are not designed to transfer, BUT with careful planning with a counselor, many courses may transfer Ask a counselor about your options based on your college and career goals 13

ENG Course Prefix—subject 1002 Course Number 07 Section Number—tells when it is offered 3 hrsCredit Hours PrerequisiteCourse(s) that need to be complete before taking IAI: Tells how the class will transfer to IAI schools 14 WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

What is a credit hour? 12 credit hours is full-time Guideline: Each 1 hour in the classroom per week = 1 credit hour 16 hours per semester needed to graduate in 2 years with an Associate’s Degree (64 hours) If you need developmental courses (begin with a 0), consider summer classes to help you graduate in a timely manner 15

Expectations For every 1 credit hour of class, you should spend 1-2 hours per week preparing Know your course expectations—for attendance, for participation, for assignments Check your ! All students are required and expected to check their IVCC K- (you have the option of forwarding this to another account ) 16

Need Help? If you are struggling, first see your instructor for extra assistance IVCC offers students extra help by way of Peer Tutoring, the Writing Center, and the Learning Commons Personal counseling and support is available in the Counseling Center The Library can help with research 17
