John 21:1-2 Afterward Jesus appeared again to His disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas also known as Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.

John 21:3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

1. When I fail, I frequently return to the familiar.

John 21:4-5 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered.

1. When I fail, I frequently return to the familiar. 2. God can use failure to move me into a preferred future.

John 21:6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

John 21:7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him for he had taken it off and jumped into the water.

2. God can use failure to move me into a preferred future. 3. Even when I think I have failed, I am mysteriously drawn to Jesus.

John 21:8-10 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”

3. Even when I think I have failed, I am mysteriously drawn to Jesus. 4. The God of the universe loves it when I understand that I get to participate in the conversation.

John 21:11-12 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.

John 21:13-14 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

4. The God of the universe loves it when I understand that I get to participate in the conversation. 5. What is going on in my head is rarely what God has in mind.

John 21:15a When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love Me more than these?”

5. What is going on in my head is rarely what God has in mind. 6. Jesus wants me to deconstruct the old so that I can step into the new.

John 21:15b-16 “Yes, Lord,” he said, “You know that I love You.” Jesus said, “Feed My lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, You know that I love You.” Jesus said, “Take care of My sheep.”

John 21:17 The third time He said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love Me?” He said, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said, “Feed My sheep.

6. Jesus wants me to deconstruct the old so that I can step into the new. 7. What I need to sacrifice is my version of the container I made.

1 Peter 1:18-19 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a Lamb without blemish or defect

1 Peter 1:20-21 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through Him you believe in God, Who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

1 Peter 1:22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.

7. What I need to sacrifice is my version of the container I made. 8. Jesus is the content in the container when I begin to love deeply.
