Evaluation Q3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? Chloe Harris

The difference between mainstream and independent film/companies and examples of thriller films that they have distributed? Mainstream Mainstream films/companies: widely known as popular or media culture, mainstream companies provide more financing to use on costumes, locations; big, well known cities, advertisements; trailers and posters, production, with well known actors and a well known director/producer. Mainstream films are targeted for all audiences; age, gender, class, which is why they get a wider viewing and higher popularity, whereas independent films/companies are usually provided for a niche segment in the market, this often means a smaller lower budget film, where usually the actors aren’t well know, as well as the location being a small city/town, independent is different to mainstream seeing as they don’t conform often to what people ‘want’, there wouldn’t be any/many special effects used and the lighting would be restricted whereas in a mainstream production they have the higher budget. independent

Mainstream Warner Bros. Pictures ‘Gangster squad’ 20 th Century Fox ‘Joy Ride 2’ Independent Film District ‘Drive’ Screen Gems ‘The Roomate’

EVALUATION Our film even though is under the ‘Paramount Pictures’ name, it is an independent categorised film, also due to research i found out that paramount pictures actually founded ‘Insurge Pictures’ which base it’s funding to independent ‘low budget’ films. Our film would be placed under independent as there are no major special effects within it meaning not a lot of money would have to be spent keeping costs low, also our genre is a hybrid of medical thriller meaning it would only interest a niche market segment; so advertising costs would be kept low and would consist of showings at festivals/small marketing websites/picture house chains, however mainstream production companies like Paramount are most likely to display our film as it has a lot of mainstream qualities that would attract a mainstream company like Paramount. INDEPENDENT?

Seeing as our film is categorised under ‘independent’ it wouldn’t be shown at highlight worldwide recognised film festivals like ‘The Cannes Film Festival’, we’d be more likely to screen our film at venues such as ‘Raindance Film Festival’ or ‘Sundance Film Festival’; one which focuses on small independent films with less media attention. The role of the film festival would be to promote our film, and provide attention to it to encourage people to go to picture house cinemas and view it. AWARDS TRUER THAN FICTION AWARD BEST FEMALE LEAD BEST DIRECTOR BEST SCREENPLAY BEST SUPPORTING MALE Social networks like twitter, facebook are easy ways to promote and distribute our film, due to the wide population towards these sites and also the easy spread of word.

TARGET AUDIENCE MEMBER FILMS GAMES TV PROGRAMMES BRANDS SPORTS

Target audience for our media product? This is Louisa Day, she is 35 years old, and lives in Devon. She dresses casually; usually a jumper and jeans/trousers, she enjoys playing monopoly and regularly attends book club. When she’s not working as a teacher, she often enjoys going out to restaurants like pizza express and wagamama’s, she shops in places like ‘bhs’ and ‘Debenhams’. She likes the thriller, romance, action and comedy genres, films like; The dark knight rises, The notebook, James bond, Shutter island. If she likes the film she will frequently watch it more than once at the cinema and purchase it on dvd blue ray. She enjoys tv programmes like; Revenge, black mirror, The wire, Breaking bad, Sherlock, the main tv channels are channel 4, E4, BBC1/2. Louisa prefers classic rock and rarely finds herself enjoying chart music; listening to ‘kerrang’. I think our film would appeal to this lady as it fits in with her usual preferences of film type, she’s a stereotypical middle aged/class, white woman who prefers a mysterious storyline with unknown actors who aren’t usually in the spotlight. It’s similar to Shutter Island as it has a controversial story line which must be uncovered and realised through watching the film...like a mystery, which links into her interests for Sherlock Holmes. The core audience for our film would be white, middle class/middle aged women, our film reaches out to a niche market segment.
