The Minnesota State Legislature created the State Arts Society 1977 Current name and structure were adopted A record of service

82% of Minnesotans believe public funding for arts and cultural activities help to make them affordable and accessible to all Minnesotans Minnesotans care about the arts …

Minnesota State Arts Board Board  Eleven members  Appointed by governor with advice of the Senate Advisory committees  200+ volunteers Staff  11 FTE

 Eleven councils  Local decision making  Targeted programs and services available in all 87 counties Regional Arts Councils

GRANTS PROGRAMS SERVICES

 Build the capacity of the nonprofit arts sector  Expand artistic and professional development for artists  Promote cultural heritage tourism  Support community and economic development  Encourage integration of the arts in education  Promote ADA compliance / accessibility  Connect Minnesotans to the arts Key activities

Roles in the grant making process Staff – planning, technical assistance, support and facilitate committees, grant administration Advisory committees – review requests, make grant recommendations Board – consider recommendations, approve or deny grants

Arts Board advisory committees  Advisors are nominated, self-nominated, or recruited  Advisors must be knowledgeable about arts  Generally seven to ten advisors per committee  Committees follow Open Meeting Law guidelines  Advisors must declare any real or perceived conflicts of interest  No compensation except expense reimbursement  In some programs, advisors make site visits
