Selective Highlighting and Skimming and Scanning

Why are people concerned about this issue? Today you are going to be using skimming, scanning and selective highlighting to answer the above question. Smoking Baby Video | Smoking Baby Smokes 40 Cigarettes Per Day

How did this text make you feel? What are you initial reactions to this text? What are some of the things contained in the text that people might be concerned about?

Too unfit to run: Two-year-old who smokes 40 cigarettes a day puffs away on a toy truck By Mail Foreign Service Last updated at 2:59 PM on 27th May 2010Mail Foreign Service Taking a deep drag on his cigarette while resting on the steering wheel of his truck, he looks like a parody of a middle-aged lorry driver. But the image covers up a much more disturbing truth: At just the tender age of two, Ardi Rizal's health has been so ruined by his 40-a-day habit that he now struggles to move by himself. The four-stone Indonesia toddler is certainly far too unfit to run around with other children - and his condition is set to rapidly deteriorate. Skim the Text Parody – what does this mean? Lorry – Why didn’t they use ‘truck’? In what country was the text written? Stone – How much is this in Kilograms? Rapidly deteriorate – how could it get worse – what kinds of things might this mean? Author and updated information – What kind of text is this?

The four-stone Indonesia toddler is certainly far too unfit to run around with other children - and his condition is set to rapidly deteriorate. Scan the text, using Selective Highlighting He is two, he should be unfit at all, for any reason. A two year old smoking? Legally you have to be 18, what is going on? Where are his parents? His health has been ruined – can he get healthy again or is it too late. What other implications does this have for him, could he possible die? He is overweight. He can’t socialise and be a kid.

Activity Instructions 1)Skim all of the text. Use one colour highlighter to Selectively Highlight those words or aspects of the text that you have questions about. Write in the margins of the text what those questions are. 2)Scan the Text, Selectively Highlighting (using a different colour highlighter) the parts of the text that will help you answer ‘Why are people concerned about this issue?’ 3)In your English workbooks put the heading ‘ Smoking Baby’ using the information you have highlighted and your own opinion on the issue answer the follow, using a structurally sound paragraph: Why have the images of Ardi Rizal smoking caused a world-wide reaction?
