S The Community The setting for The Giver comes across as gray and depressing. It takes place in a small village sometime in the future. The people are controlled by their community elders, they have no control of how their lives are run. Their spouses are chosen for them, their children are picked at a ceremony, and at the age of 12 their jobs are picked based upon their skills. The villagers do not feel emotions because they are controlled by pills, this way they do not fight the community elders. The top is the area of the village and the bottom is just an area of the village.

C Jonas Jonas, the protagonist, would like to see his community change in a way that means more freedom for all. He wishes that his friends, family, and strangers could see colors, joy and pain and not be controlled by the community elders. When Jonas turns twelve he is given the important role as the Receiver of Memory. Even before being assigned to this role, Jonas was always caring and concerned about family and friends. He had a big heart and wanted the best for everyone. When Jonas started his training he begins to see colors he had not seen before. Ordinary villagers do not see in color, only in black and white. He starts to feel pain and joy from the memories that the giver gave him. Even though there are rules, Jonas has to deal with the fact that he can’t take any medicine for the pain. Jonas has to deal with this alone because he can’t tell anyone about his training to become the Receiver of Memory. Jonas is learning from the giver and is preparing to be the next Receiver of Memory.

The Giver C The Giver, a protagonist, is an old man who is training Jonas so he can become the next Receiver of Memory. The Giver has been the memory keeper for many years. He uses his power by helping the Elders make decisions for the community. Although the Giver works with the elders, he feels that each person should have control over their own memories and feelings. Instead, he holds all the pain and joy that the villagers feel and has spent his life dealing with this burden.

C Gabriel Gabriel lives with Jonas’s family. Gabriel is being taken care of by Jonas’s father, who is the assigned nurturer. Gabriel was supposed to reach a developmental point where he would go onto live in a new home. Gabriel did not reach this goal, and continues living with Jonas’s family. If Gabriel does not reach the goal he will be sent away from the village. Gabriel struggles to sleep at night unless Jonas shows him memories, something that is not allowed. Gabriel is restless at night and an active little boy in the day.

C Father Father has two children, Jonas and Lily, who he loves very much. Fathers job is a nurturer. He takes care of infants until they are given a new home at the ceremony of names. Father is very dedicated to his job and family. In the story he is taking care of Gabriel, the baby currently living at their house. Takes his job very seriously but when it comes to family he is playful.

Asher C Asher is one of Jonas’s best friend. Asher usually talks too much and too fast. Since Asher talks so fast, he usually mixes the words up and then no one is able to understand him. He loves to have fun and sometimes gets into trouble. When Asher turned twelve, he was assigned the position of Assistant Director of Recreation. Asher is all fun and play. At times, he can take things seriously.

P Plot Rising Action: The Giver is about a boy named Jonas who lives in a community called Sameness. In the community the people do not have any feelings, they can’t see colors, they have no memories, and the can’t feel love. Ever since Jonas became the Receiver of Memory he started seeing his community in a different way. He believes that everyone should have feelings, have memories, and see colors. Climax: When Jonas finds out what release is, which is death, he and the Giver make a plan to share all of the memories that they are holding in their heads with the community. They think it is important for everyone to feel love, see colors, and have memories. The Giver explains to Jonas that if he runs away, all of the stored memories will be released into the community. Jonas wants the Giver to runaway with him, however, the Giver told Jonas that he must stay behind to help the people understand and cope with the new memories and feelings. “ If you get away, if you get beyond, if you get elsewhere, it will mean that the community has to bear the burden themselves, of the memories you have been holding for them”. (p.155) Falling Action: The night before Jonas runs away his father says that Gabriel will be released because he cannot sleep without Jonas and that won’t work when Gabe is given a new home. Later that night Jonas grabs Gabe and starts to runaway in the woods. It is unclear if Jonas lives or dies as he struggles with the winter weather as they travel through strange new places. Also the author does not tell us if the community received the memories.

C Man v. Society The conflict in The Giver surrounds Jonas and his new role as the Receiver of Memories. Jonas is now seeing the world differently as he holds all the happiness, and sadness of the community members. Jonas does not like that this is what his community is really like and wants to change it.

T & R Theme: One of the major themes in this story is that memories and feelings are important to having a good life. “Love” the Giver told him. Jonas repeated it. “Love.” it was a word and concept new to him. (p.125) Resolution: Jonas decides to runaway so that everyone will be able to have memories and feelings. Before Jonas ran away he took Gabriel with him. Father was planning to release Gabriel because the baby is unable to sleep without Jonas. Resolution

MOOD The mood in the giver is sad, depressing, happy, and gray.
