RADIOLOGY NURSING What do we do anyway? No we do not take Xrays!

Your Radiology Nurses Denise Street RN, BSN – Charge Nurse Debbie Hardy RN – Clinical Staff Nurse Sharon Bryant RN, BSN – Clinical Staff Nurse Daniel Shaw RN – Clinical Staff Nurse Nina Johnson RN, BSN – Clinical Staff Nurse Jill Kuschel RN – Clinical Staff Nurse Theresa Cochran RN – Clinical Staff Nurse Total nursing years = 161 Total Radiology Nursing years = 44

Radiology Department Radiology Department has six different modalities: –Cat Scan –MRI –Diagnostics –Ultrasound –Mammography –Nuclear Medicine PET Cardiac

Responsibilities Access ports and start numerous peripheral IVs each day for CT, MRI and Nuclear Medicine/PET Run Creatinine tests Provide moderate sedation for IR procedures in CT as well as bone biopsies and aspirations. Admit and recover muscular skeletal procedures (MSK) as well as recover myelograms for Neuro Radiology. Prepare and assist with coronary CTAs Provide patient education with regards to all radiological exams and discharge instructions.

Responsibilities cont. Hydrate patients pre and post procedure. Support and assist all staff with any patient care issues as they arise. Respond to contrast reactions, monitor and provide post teaching. Respond to infiltrations, monitor and provide post teaching. IV certify technologists. Provide competencies for all staff in Radiology.

Responsibilities cont. Insert Foley catheters for VCUG exams. Respond to any emergencies in Radiology. Provide patient monitoring in all modalities including, MRI,CT,Xray,Nuc Med, PET and or Mammography. Provide emotional support to patients and families as needed.

Things you can do When scheduling the patient make sure to have all questions answered with regard to allergies and screening forms. If patient is a hard IV stick then they should be scheduled and extra 30 min earlier than normal. Have patient pre-medicated if has allergies to Gadollinium or Iodinated IV contrast. If patient is claustrophobic, may need oral medication. Be cognizant of the patient’s condition. If they are unable to lay down without experiencing pain, please have them pre-medicate or schedule with general anesthesia for moderate sedation. Radiology nurses do not provide moderate sedation for any scans.

Things you can do cont. If patient has a port and wishes to use it, please don’t schedule after 3pm or on weekends. When ordering PICC line placements, please make sure the physicians also include a DC order. Please call us with any questions.
