American Resume Writing Styles Welcome Spanish & German Job Applicants

Introduction To explain and summarize the differences between a resume written for employment in the countries of Spain and Germany and a resume written for employment in the United States To explain and summarize the importance of including a cover letter with a resume To explain and summarize information that should be included in a resume for a job in the United States To explain and summarize the difference between a chronological ordered resume and reverse chronological ordered resume

American, German & Spanish Resume Formatting Differences American Resume- has 10 different sections of information that must be included Spanish Resume- has 7 different sections of information that must be included German Resume- has 6 different sections of information that must be included Paper Size For Resumes- American- 8.5 x 11, German- A4, Spanish- A4

Spanish Resume Included Information Datos Personales- names, surnames, date of birth, current address, and contact details Datos Academicos- start with the most recent, give the date, the academic institution, location, and qualification (plus Spanish where possible) Otros Titulos- a section for qualifications or awards you may have received Experiencia Profesional- starting with the most recent, list the job you had in the past. This section merely requires the date, job title, company and location

Spanish Resume Included Information Continued Otras Posiciones De Responsibilidad- in this section include any positions of responsibility that you have held that are relevant to the job or that you just want to brag about Idiomas- in this section include any languages you speak fluently including your own Aficiones- in this section include any relevant interests and whether you have a driver license.

German Resume Included Information Personliche Angaben- name, address, street, contact details, marital status, nationality Passport Sized Photo- must be included in the top-right corner of resume Summarize your Lebenslauf- summarize yourself and what you do in ‘Profil’ under your Personaliche Angaben section Spezialisierung- mention your area of study Ausbildung- education information section that includes information about your studies, schools attended, relevant qualifications and Intermediate Financial Statements

German Resume Included Information Continued Berufliche Erfahrung- Work history section. List your work history in reverse chronological order. For each job, list the dates, title, and establishment in the first line Sonstiges- special skills section here you will list skills you have acquired such as Microsoft Word and Adobe Photoshop

United States Resume Included Information Contact Information- includes your full name, current address, primary phone number, and address. If you have a professional Web site that features work samples you may include the URL Objective/Profile/Summary Statement- an optional section that is most effective when you know the specific industry or type of work that interests you, or when you are transitioning from one career to another. Education- begin with the most recent degree you are pursuing or have earned and list additional degrees in reverse chronological order

United States Resume Included Information Continued Education- include you institution and its location by city and state, degree level, major, minor, or concentration, and the month and year of graduation Scholarships, academic awards, and other honors- this information can be listed in the education section or listed separately Relevant courses, class projects, and independent studies- this information can also be listed in the education section and can often help bolster credentials if you have less relevant work experience

United States Resume Included Information Continued Experience- emphasize relevant experience that you have gained through part- and full-time employment, paid and unpaid internships, volunteer positions, and leadership positions with student organizations Skills- separate this section into sub-headings to include: language skills, computer skills: software and/or programs where you have acquired knowledge, special skills such as training and facilitation, conflict mediation, or public speaking skills

United States Resume Included Information Continued Leadership and/ or Community Activities- a continuation of the skills section. In this section you can list your degree of involvement with college and community activities Training/Certifications/Licenses- in this section, you can list any completed trainings or earned certification or licenses that relate to your career goals Activities/Professional Associations- in this section, you can provide a list of your accomplishments, extracurricular activities, or professional associations

Cover Letter Importance Tells the employer the type of position you are seeking and how qualified you are for that position Adds focus to your resume Very few employers will consider a resume without one Can provide information that a resume alone cannot Must be tailored to each position you apply for

Resume Spelling and Grammar Importance To present yourself in a manner that focuses on your career while playing down your weaknesses To present yourself as someone who is properly educated, intelligent, and competent To present yourself as someone who cares about the quality of his or her work

Resume Chronological vs Reverse Chronological Order Chronological Order- starts by listing your work history with the most recent positions listed first Considered one of the most common resume formats Resume format preferred by employers because it’s easy to see what jobs you have held and when you have worked them

Resume Chronological vs Reverse Chronological Order Continued Reverse Chronological Order- most commonly used resume style Shows your work history in reverse chronological order Can be used when you have a work history with limited or no gaps in employment Can be used when your most recent job is related to the job you are seeking

Conclusion the rules for formatting a resume to acquire employment in the United States are somewhat different from the rules for formatting a resume to acquire employment in the countries of Spain and Germany Social, Cultural and Regional cues are also different across our 3 counties in regard to acquiring employment in each of our respective countries
