CONTRACEPTIVES

How Pregnancy Happens  Review  Ejaculate gets in her vagina or on her vulva  Unprotected vaginal intercourse  Can take up to six days for sperm to fertilize an egg  Then up to 10 days for the fertilized egg to implant itself into the lining of the uterus

Preventative Measures  Abstinence  Birth Control Pill  Condoms  Withdrawal  Emergency Contraceptives

Abstinence  The practice of not engaging in sexual intercourse or sexual play  This is the only way to prevent 100% against pregnancy and/or STDs

Birth Control Pill  Up to 99.7% effective against pregnancy  Health benefits  Less acne  Fewer menstrual cramps  Regular periods  Only effective if taken every day  Does not protect against STDs  Can be obtained at a health care provider

Condoms  One of the only ways to protect against STDs, besides abstinence  Latex condoms are up to 98% effective against pregnancy  Female condoms are up to 95% effective  Can be obtained at most pharmacies or health care providers

Withdrawal  AKA the pull out method  Removing the penis from the vagina before ejaculation  Not a method recommended for teens  High risk of pregnancy  Susceptible to STDs

Emergency Contraceptives  Also known as emergency birth control, backup birth control, the morning after pill, and by the brand names  Must be taken within 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected intercourse  The sooner, the better  Available OTC to women and men over 17  Teens under 17 can still get EC with a prescription.

Exit Slip  Which is better: using a condom or the withdrawal method?  Justify your answer on a piece of your own paper
