SRTC Awards Subcommittee Report July 2005 Clyde Carr, Chairman Members: Roberto Di Salvo Mark Langhenry Jamie Neidert Brian Katz William Kearney Herman Krier David Mann

CHARTER The SRTC awards subcommittee shall establish and administer award programs in the solid rocket propulsion field to acknowledge major technical, academic, and professional contributions in this area, as required. This subcommittee shall also participate in the selection of the AIAA Wyld Propulsion Award recipient, on a yearly basis, as well as respond to requests for AIAA awards as requested. This subcommittee shall also implement an AIAA SRTC "Best Paper" Awards Program and a student scholarship program awarded on merit and involvement in the field of solid rocket propulsion

Honors and Awards Goals Recognizing the Very Best in Our Industry Recognizing outstanding achievement is one of the primary responsibilities of the Institute. AIAA proudly meets this responsibility through its honors and awards program. The program regularly and conscientiously surveys the aerospace field, identifies practitioners in its arts and sciences who have made notable and significant contributions, and honors them in public ceremonies Recognition of your profession and your peers cannot happen without YOU! –Consider submitting worthy professionals in our business!

Agenda Year in Review WYLD Award and other SRTC Awards ASME/AIAA 2004 JPC –JPC SRTC Best Paper Award Monetary awardsto universities/colleges Summary

Year in Review Wyld Award –G.P. Purohit, Boeing Technical Fellow, The Boeing Company –Hypergolic bipropellants and zero-gravity capillary devices will receive the Wyld Award 2004 JPC Best Paper Award –“Nonlinear Rocket Motor Stability Prediction: Limit Amplitude, Triggering, and Mean Pressure Shift,” by Flandro, Fischbach, Majdalani, and French No awards given at 2005 AS Meeting in Reno for contributions to the SRTC –But…what about July 2005????

WYLD Award The Propulsion Award and the James H. Wyld Memorial Award honoring the developer of the regeneratively-cooled rocket engine were combined in 1964 to become the James H. Wyld Propulsion Award. In 1975 the name was again modified to the Wyld Propulsion Award, which is now presented for outstanding achievement in the development or application of rocket propulsion systems. Recent winners… –1994 Dr. Richard R Weiss 1995 Prof. John R Osborn 1996 Prof. Richard H Sforzini 1997 Leonard H Caveny 1998 Prof. Herman Krier 2001 Mr. Franklin R Chang-Diaz 2002 Ms. Yvonne C Brill 2003 Dr. Stanley V Gunn 2004 Mr. Thomas L Boggs

National Awards - Wyld Wyld Award Candidates – 2005 –Kenjiro Kamjiro, Professor, Tohoku University –Basic and applied research of cavitation phenomena on liquid propulsion rotating machinery –Hank Hearn, Sr. Staff Engineer, Lockheed Martin Space Systems –Space propulsion expert, developer of the theoretical basis for bipropellant blow down concept, developer of rapid evaluation tools for engines and systems –2005 Winner - G.P. Purohit, Boeing Technical Fellow, The Boeing Company –Hypergolic bipropellants and zero-gravity capillary devices Any SRM candidates for next year?

2004 JPC/SRTC Best Paper Submittals from JPC sessions chairs –6 papers submitted by Chairs from Ft. Lauderdale meeting – fantastic! –Awards Committee reviews and rates the papers for 3 top choices –Awards Chairs tallies the votes (highest number of top votes) –Awards Chair notifies National (Betty Guillame) and National notifies the authors Submit 2005 best papers to Award Committee/AIAA National (submit form from your session) –Evaluate for technical content, originality, practical application, and style/format – I will send out the criteria with the papers – copies out by no later than February 2006 –Return best paper choices to Clyde Carr (April 2006) Winner will be announced at 2006 JPC

2005 JPC/SRTC Best Paper NOTES TO SESSION CHAIRS in TUCSON Submit recommendations for best paper to AIAA National or Send copies to Clyde Carr –Send paper number and I can get it from AIAA National if you don’t have it I will distribute, evaluate, and record –How wide of a review group is required, etc? Awards committee members JPC session chairs (optional) –Evaluate using AIAA standards/guidelines (on the Web) Student guidelines

Undergraduate/Graduate Involvement Ft. Lauderdale 2004/Reno 2005 –SRTC voted to give 3 US universities $1000 each to support (aerospace/SRM) engineering activities Only one followed through for the funding (Haaland)! –University of Illinois –Why? Provide monies to keep university students involved in aerospace/SRM projects –What should AIAA/SRTC ask in return from the universities? Papers at the student AIAA conferences, AIAA JPC, etc.? Brief report on the activities performed?

Undergraduate/Graduate Involvement (cont) –Should we formalize the process with an application or use the voting process at the STRC meeting at the JPC? Send to several universities known to have SRM related programs –Auburn, Alabama, Illinois, Purdue, Penn State, etc. –Yes was the suggestion at the 2005 Reno meeting I have not yet developed a form/format, etc. Any volunteers? Any suggestions for what should be on this “form” –I would like to keep it simple… I am Professor Rocket man and have X students pursing new, hot technologies on propellants that are colored purple and blue with white stripes…….. I would like you to consider the project and a $1000 award to continue the work. I/we will report back to the SRTC at the next JPC meeting in written or oral form detailing the progress with said funding. –SRTC thoughts and input….?

National Awards Other awards…need nominees…submit to SRTC or to your local AIAA Section –Major Goddard and Reed –Distinguished Lectureship Dryden-Research, Durand-Public Service, Von Karman-Astronautics, and Wright Brothers-Aeronautics –International International Cooperation
