National Aeronautics and Space Administration CFE-2 On-Orbit Operations Status Ops Complete (to date) Ops Planned (next months) Ops Planned (to completion) ICF1 – 16/16 tests ICF2 – 14/16 tests VG1 – 70/60 tests VG2 – 20/60 tests Complete Increment 29/30 10 additional test points Increment 29/30 Scheduled as prime for Increment 29/30 Highlight Dan Burbank operated Vane Gap 1 (VG-1) on January 26, This series of test was with VG-1 and filled perforations in quadrant 1. The 10 additional test points allowed the PI to isolate the 43 degree vane gap angle within 1 degree for capillary flow critical angle. The CFE-2 Vane Gap-2 (VG2) was operated on January 16, Don Pettit requested that Space to Ground voice loop be enabled so that he could speak directly to the PI Mark Weislogel. Don performed 10 test points for VG-2 vessel.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration SLICE On-Orbit Operations Status Ops Complete (to date) Ops Planned (next months) Ops Planned (to completion) 100% Methane – 0/40 tests 70% Methane – 0/40 tests 40% Methane – 0/40 tests 100% Propane – 0/40 tests 100% Ethylene – 0/40 tests 20% Ethylene – 0/30 tests 100% Ethane – 0/30 tests Start Increment 30 Increment 30 Increment 30 Increment 30 Scheduled as prime for Increment 30 Highlight SLICE was installed in the MSG on Jan 20, 2012, by Don Pettit. During the SLICE power up the video title box initialized in the HEX mode instead of the Normal mode. Performed power cycle, then performed connector check, no change. Stopped operations at this point and began working on ground test to simulate the problem. The SLICE team used the SPICE Engineering Unit hardware in B110 lab to recreate the problem and develop steps to correct the problem on orbit. The SLICE team worked with MSG team and developed a SLICE Reset Video Overlay procedure. SLICE is scheduled run SLICE Video Reset Overlay procedure in the MSG on Feb 6, 2012.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration InSPACE-3 On-Orbit Operations Status Ops Complete (to date) Ops Planned (next months) Ops Planned (to completion) NoneOps scheduled for May 2012 Highlight Completed training for astronaut Kevin Ford (ISS crew increment 34/35) and astronaut Chris Hadfield (ISS crew increment 33/34) on InSPACE. Training went well and both seemed interested in performing it. Performed the monthly inspections (1/5/12 by Bob Green, Project Scientist for InSPACE-3) of the non-flight vials for particle clumping and/or any other changes to the fluid. No change from prior month inspection.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-6 (BCAT-6) Ops Complete (to date) Ops Planned (Next Month) Ops Planned (to completion) First science run of samples 1,2,3 Re-Test of P & G sample 1. Harvard samples 5 & 4 Ten samples STATUS- 10 samples – 1, 2 ( P & G) Poly-dispersity and Product Aging, 3,4,5 (Harvard) Phase Separation, 6,7 (NYU) Seeded Growth, 8 (NYU) Polystyrene Spheres with DNA Glue, 9, 10 (UPENN) Colloidal Disks Sample 3 is complete, sample 5 will start next. Mike Fossum reports crystals in sample 6, 7 and 9 The PI reports that sample 3 is evolved very slowly at a time scale that would not be possible on the earth. This is very significant since it validates the (new) model for phase separation that the PI has theorized. Crew training January 23-27, ISSUES- Continue to operate with batteries in JEM 18
