faithfulness “I will build a school... i promise,” Greg Mortenson.

Essential question: How does faithfulness strengthen relationships?

Faithfulness Faithfulness is commitment to someone or something. When a married person is faithful, they stand by their spouse and don't cheat. Faithfulness refers to this quality of being faithful and loyal. A patriotic person is full of faithfulness to their country. Someone who works at one company for decades has faithfulness to that company. People can have faithfulness to ideas too, including religious, political, and artistic ideas.

faithfulness is when you are True to your friends, not backstabbing them Loyal to others and yourself by keeping your promises Patriotic to your nation Committed to your faith and ideas, testing them to make sure they are true

faithfulness i Nothing in life can take the place of faithfulness and dependability. It is one of the greatest virtues. Brilliance, genius, competence—all are subservient to the quality of faithfulness. Wallace Fridy Monday

subservient Subservient means "compliant," "obedient," "submissive," or having the qualities of a servant. Something that's subservient has been made useful, or put into the service of, something else.

subservient Brilliance, genius and competence all bow dow to faithfulness as a superior character quality.

Response Sheet Chapters Due Now!

Chapters Mortenson has great news to deliver to Haji Ali about the school, but first he takes tea. What does this reveal about Mortenson? “I brought everything we need to build a school” Greg said in Balti. “And I hope we can begin building it soon, Inshallah” (43). This is the good news he shared with Haji Ali. Taking tea shows that Mortenson is patient to learn how things need to be done in Korphe. “He decided to stay in Korphe until he understood everything he had to do to make the school possible” (44). Mortenson is patient and sensitive to how things need to be done in the local cultural.

Summary & ESLR Connection Respects the Culture. D-4 Responds to cultural differences with appropriate sensitivity.

Chapters What does taking tea reveal about the Balti culture and traditions? Why is this significant to the story? Taking tea shows that someone is willing to slow down enough to get to know Balti people, to understand what they think and feel. It shows that they value relationships. It is significant to the story because it will take a lot of tea and talking to get the school in Korphe built. It is not just a project that must be done in so many weeks--it’s about caring for the people who will benefit from the school.

Summary & ESLR Connection Build Relationships through Hospitality. D-3 Respects each individual as unique and valuable.

Chapters How does Mortenson’s return to Korphe affect his relationship with Haji Ali and the people of Korphe? Mortenson’s return to Korphe prove that he is trustworthy. Not only did he make a promise out of gratefulness and compassion, but he returns to fulfill it. This deepens the relationship between Mortenson and Haji Ali, Korphe’s village chief. His trust in Mortenson grows. Now villagers believe the words he said will become reality for them. They can now put their own effort into the project.

Summary & ESLR Connection Builds Trust. E-3 Demonstrates integrity.

Chapters What new obstacle does Mortenson face in these chapters? Mortenson discovers that a bridge must be built first before the school can be started! It is the only way supplies will be able to cross the Braldu River to reach Korphe. The rickety box suspended from a cable cannot carry all the materials needed to build the school.

Summary & ESLR Connection Remains Faithful. D-2 Recognizes the benefits of diversity. D-4 Responds to cultural differences with appropriate sensitivity. E-2 Practices stewardship.

Chapters In what ways does Mortenson practice the virtue of faithfulness? Explain the impact this has upon the people around him. * He returns to the United States to fundraise in order to build a school in Pakistan. * He purchases supplies in Rawalpindi and trucks it up to Skardu personally (in order to save money). * He returns to the village where he made the promise to build the school. * He adapts to local customs when it comes to how the school will actually be built. * He promises to try to raise funds to build the necessary bridge to transport supplies to the school.

Summary & ESLR Connection Practices Faithfulness. E-3 Demonstrates integrity.

Chapters In what ways does Mortenson practice the virtue of faithfulness? Explain the impact this has upon the people around him. Mortenson’s acts of faithfulness show the people of Korphe that he can be trusted to fulfill his promise. They are motivated to work and complete the project now that Mortenson has worked to raise funds and returned with supplies for the school. His following through on his promise proves to them that he was truly grateful for their acts of hospitality and care.

Summary & ESLR Connection Builds Trust. D-3 Respects each individual as unique and valuable.

Chapters How does the ibex hunt reflect the values and tradition of the Balti community? The hunt reveals the values of treating each family as equal to receive a share of meat. It also shows that religious tradition infuses each part of the villagers lives. Even hunting, is a gift from God. They were grateful for God’s provision of meat for them.

Response Sheet Chapters Due Tuesday!

Essential question: How does faithfulness strengthen relationships?

Chapters Mortenson exhibits creativity when he asks George McCown to help pay those who were working on the bridge in Korphe. Why does he do this? Greg wanted the people of Korphe to think that he wasn’t the only American interested in them and the project. Having McCown hand the money to them gave the appearance that he was part of a larger operation. The truth is there were other Americans not only interested in the project, but who had willingly donated toward it. In a way McCown was involved since it was through the AHF newsletter that Jean Hoerni came into contact with Greg. McCown legitimized a reality that the village of Korphe could not have completely understood.

Chapters The title of chapter ten is “Building Bridges.” The title has a literal and a figurative meaning. Define both and tell how each relates to the story. The literal bridge will connect Korphe to the “outside” world. From this point on its people will be able to travel more freely and connect with others in their vicinity and beyond. The figurative bridge built relationships with others. The women in particular benefitted from the bridge. Greg wasn’t thinking about this when building it, but it opened their world to have more frequent visits with their families in neighboring villages (73). Otherwise it took half a day to walk to the nearest bridge (15).

Chapters What important personal event takes place in chapter eleven? Greg meets Tara Bishop, falls in love and marries her after only six days! He puts off his return to Pakistan four times before following through on taking his flight to Islamabad.

Chapters At the school construction site, what does Haji Ali instruct Mortenson to do? In what ways does Mortenson recognize the benefits of diversity? Haji Ali tells Greg to sit down and shut his mouth (77). He was going about managing the school construction with too much intensity. Greg realized he had to set aside his driven, Western, approach and accept the way the local people chose to build. He was in their land and they were using an approach and materials they were familiar with. They were the experts. Greg was a trained Nurse, not a Baltistani local. He recognized that his way wasn’t the best way.

Chapters Retell, in your own words, the custom of “three cups of tea” as defined by Haji Ali. How does this custom strengthen faithfulness in relationships? “Tea” is a relationship building experience. The Balti get to know each other over cups of tea and talk about what is important. With each “cup”, or meeting with tea, one’s relationship can grow deeper. As this takes place, the commitment of the Balti toward the one they serve tea increases--from welcoming them as a stranger, to enjoying them as a friend and sometimes embracing them as family. Mortenson learns to slow down and take time to talk and get to know and learn from the people he wants to care for (79).

Chapters What are some sacrifices the people of Korphe made in order to build the school? The men walked all night to carry beams that will hold up the school’s roof. They do so joyfully. Even the mullah helped, when technically he didn’t have to. The men also divided their time and energies between building the school and their other responsibilities, such as caring for their crops and animals. They also endured the intensity of having Greg over them, keeping track of every detail, writing things down in his notebook in a language they didn’t understand--most could not write even in their own language.

Chapters Why does Mortenson consider Haji Ali to be the “wisest man he ever met”? Greg considered Haji Ali wise because of the coaching he received with regard to local culture and attending to the school project, but mostly with how he dealt with the foe, Haji Mehdi. Haji Ali was willing to give up temporary wealth for the benefit of having the enduring wealth of education and the ability to read. He knew the lasting benefits these would bring to his village.

Chapters Explain how practicing hospitality and faithfulness strengthen relationships.

Chapters Explain how practicing hospitality and faithfulness strengthen relationships.

faithfulness iI The man who promises everything is sure to fulfill nothing, and everyone who promises too much is in danger of using evil means in order to carry out his promises, and is already on the road to perdition. Carl Jung, Swiss Psychiatrist Tuesday

promise keeping: best practices Think before you speak. Don’t make promises you can’t keep. Know your abilities and limits. Make it a priority. Know your schedule. Prioritize your time to keep promises. Write it down. Ask someone to help you remember. Create a reminder on your phone. Fulfill your promise as soon as possible. Do whatever it takes to keep your promise.
