OAISD Grade Level Math Academies Curriculum Directors Overview 11/21/07 Mike Klavon Ottawa Area ISD 1

Math Academy Goals To guide and support you as a teacher-leader for your grade level in your local district. To provide you the opportunity to meet and collaborate with teachers from other districts in your specific grade level. To help you synthesize the latest research, strategies and resources for high priority topics in kindergarten. To increase the possibility of success for all students by implementing what research tells us! 2

Session 1 Goals Get to know other grade level teachers from within our ISD. Determine specific needs that are common to “most” local districts to help better meet them in future dates. Clearly understand the “Elements of Highly Effective Mathematics Programs” to use as a guide for strengthening your current math program. Begin exploring accessibility strategies and resources that support our first topic. 3

Elements of Highly Effective Mathematics Programs Directions Read and highlight important information in your assigned section. (≈ 10 min.) Share what you found to be important with your group. (≈ 10 min.) Create a concept map on a poster to help your group summarize your section to the everyone else. (≈ 10 min.) Whole group sharing. (≈ 25 min.) 4

Elements of Highly Effective Mathematics Programs Break into 5 groups Everyone read the first two paragraphs Group 1 – What Gets Taught (p. 1) Group 2 – How Math Is Taught (p. 4) Group 3 – Good Teaching Is Key (p. 6) Group 4 – Special Support for Struggling Students (p. 8) Group 5 – Role of District and School Leaders (p. 10) 5

Accessibility Strategies 120 Chart Ten-Frames to support activities that originally used only unifix cubes. Base 10 Blocks Use to concretely represent totals of hundreds, tens and ones (Expanded Notation) Place-value Cards Also known as Secret Code Cards Use to represent totals of tens and ones (Expanded Notation) and then put them together to represent the numerical value (Standard Notation) 6

120 Chart 7

Ten-Frames A ten-frame is a 2x5 array in which counters or dots can be placed to illustrate numbers. What characteristics do you notice about ten-frames?

Secret Code Cards Secret Code Cards A ten card and a one card are used together to demonstrate the “invisible” zero in the tens place. These cards offer visual reinforcement of the place value concept. 9
