Instruments Vocabulary Standard(s) Presentation for IODE-JCOMM Metadata Meeting

Define the Domain ‘Instrument’ {give a few typical definitions, or just the one we’re using for this talk}

Overview of Domain Vocabularies are there many vocabularies for this domain? are any in formal vocabulary registries? are any existing vocabularies well managed? topic coverage is domain coverage wide and without gaps? is domain coverage deep and disciplined?

Domain Vocabularies In Context Frameworks do any content standards leverage these terms? do any tools leverage these terms? are there projects to develop or manage these vocabularies? Usage are there any mappings of these terms? how many projects use one of these vocabularies?

Candidate Vocabularies what are the most well-known, well-used, well-constructed, and well-managed vocabularies?

Vocabulary Comparison Usage: log(10) Instances : log(2) Projects : Clearinghouses / 2

Comparison Matrix Instructions For each standard/vocabulary that is compared, enter all the codes that apply to the standard. Definitions follow Does each variable have an Identifier, Name, and Description? Does each vocabulary file have a Collect ID? a Version stamp? Is vocabulary accessible via web? automatic services? as an ontology? What kind of help is available (User’s Guide, Help docs, Mail Forum, Support, Examples?) How good is the coverage? Does it cover the entire domain (Wide)? Does it cover its subdomain in detail (Deep)? How many 100s of terms does it have? How wide is the agreement to use it (a Project, a Community, or whole Domain)? 3 numbers: (a) log(base 10) of the # of usage instances (b) log(base 2) of the number of projects using it. (c) Number of clearinghouses that accept it, divided by 2. At what level is it managed? An organization, an association, at the national level, or at the international level? (If a standards body, consider it international.) For the and columns, include all letters that precede the applicable category. For example, if is Multinational, enter OANM. If the whole domain agrees on a standard (does not have to be exclusive agreement), enter PCD. (All math is to nearest integer, with 0.5 rounded up. For example, if “# of terms” is less than 50, the cover numerical ranking is 0. Number are chosen to provide rough normalization.
