Data Commons Progress Report on a Data Exchange Network Medbiquitous Annual Meeting April 2013 Dana BostromLen Armstrong Executive DirectorDirector, Information Technology w:

Today’s agenda Vision of Data Commons Organizational Update How to.. ▫Be a Data Contributor ▫Request Data Technical overview

Vision of Data Commons One Stop Shop. Allows organizations and individuals to request data for purposes such as: ▫Receiving official documents ▫Confirming status of medical professionals ▫Longitudinal research Maximize Privacy. ▫Minimizes storage of data and transmission of identifying details

Organizational Update Data Commons, LLC has formed and currently has these parties governing the entity: ▫American Board of Family Medicine ▫American Board of Pediatrics ▫Association of American Medical Colleges ▫Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates ▫Federation of State Medical Boards ▫National Board of Medical Examiners

More New... Data Contributors: We are matching data from new organizations into the Data Commons ID system Data Users: We are accepting requests from organizations who want to “use” the Data Commons infrastructure to send & receive data Timeline: ▫We expect to be able to serve requests for data through APIs in the 3 rd quarter of 2013 ▫A “Research” app (for longitudinal research) will launch in 2014

Data Contributors

How to... be a Data Contributor ▫Get your data matched & prepare to make it available  Match your identity data to the Data Commons infrastructure  Decide what data to make available to the Data Commons  Link your data to Data Commons ▫On-going…  Match new identities as they come in to your organization’s systems  Identify data prices and rules for availability  As application are approved, grant permissions for requesting apps to use your data

How to....Request Data Data Confirmation What: An organization requests that Data Commons confirm that information submitted by an individual is true Who works with Data Commons: A software “app” eg journal, social networking software, etc. How: Through an API Data Verification What: An individual requests or authorizes another to request official documents / proof of status, certification, license, scores, etc. Who works with Data Commons: A software “app” eg a CVO How: Through an API

How to...request research data Data Commons is building a “research app” which will allow individuals to request longitudinal data sets for policy, academic, etc. research App is expected in early 2014 If you want to be involved now, please let us know – we can use your thoughts as we build it!

How the Identity Matching Service (IDMS) works Set up: Participating organizations provide identifying data about the population of interest, including the organization’s “native” ID (e.g., USMLE ID) so they can be added to IDMS ▫Currently matching 4 new partner organizations On-going: As new persons are added or existing persons updated, the organization submits additional identifying data records to IDMS On-demand: As data requests are processed, the IDMS translates “native” ID of the requestor to the “native” ID of the data contributor ▫Example:  NBME requests data about a student identified by a USMLE ID  IDMS translates the request to identify the student by an AAMC ID  IDMS forwards the translated request to AAMC
