Chapter 1 Section 1 Vocab. Definitions Variable - a letter or symbol used to represent a value that can change. Constant – a value that does not change. Numerical expression –contains only constants and/or operations. Algebraic expression -contains variables, constants, and/or operations. Evaluate – to find the value of an expression. Replacement set – a set of numbers that can be substituted for a variable.

To evaluate an expression is to find its value. To evaluate an algebraic expression, substitute numbers for the variables in the expression and then simplify the expression. A replacement set is a set of numbers that can be substituted for a variable.

Example3: Evaluate each expression for the replacement set {2,4,5.7}. A) x + 8 Substitute each value in the replacement set for x and simplify. x + 8 x + 8 x + 8 2 + 8 4 + 8 5.7 + 8 10 12 13.7
