WRITING EXPRESSIONS
6.EE Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers. Objective: Understand how to write expressions based on the context of a situation Learning target: Answer at least 3 of the 4 expression questions correctly on the exit ticket.
What is an expression? A mathematical phrase that can have numbers, variables, and operations. Examples: x + 6 7y 3a² + b - 5
How do we know which operation to use? Add if things are being gained, increased, or combined. Subtract if things are being lost/used, decreased, or given/taken away. Multiply if there are groups or the same thing happens repeatedly. Divide if things are being split up.
Write an expression to represent the situation: I have n boxes, each with 4 papers. How many papers do I have? The same thing is happening repeatedly: the first box has 4 papers, the second box has 4, same with the third, and so on. Therefore, this is a multiplication situation. 4n (or 4×n)
Write an expression to represent the situation: I had j gifts but gave 5 away. How many do I have now? I start with j, then lose 5 of them, so this is a subtraction problem. j – j would NOT be a correct answer. This would be saying I started with 5 gifts and gave away j of them.
Write an expression to represent the situation: 6 friends are going to split the $y food bill equally. How much does each person pay? The total amount of $y, so that goes on top. Then, it is being split into 6 equal groups, so divide by 6. would NOT be a correct answer. This would be saying the total cost was $6 dollars and it is being split up among y people.
Write an expression to represent the situation: I have 7 coins and Bob has b. If we combine them, how many do we have? Combining means we are putting together the two amounts, so use addition b + 7 (or 7 + b) Addition is commutative, meaning you are allowed to switch the order of the terms.

Direct Station We will use whiteboards/Educreations to not only write expressions but solve them for different values
Collaborative/Skill-Building Station Go to the Google Form on my staff webpage under “Links for April 4” You will be given an expression and must create your own word problem that fits the expression. Example: Create a situation/question that fits the expression h + 23 If you finish early, there is a second link to practice evaluating expressions.
Independent Station You will switch back to ST Math’s unit on solving equations.
