Celltrailia E.T Constructed by Madison Fisher, Garrette Scherba, and Nicole Williams

Cell Membrane/Cell Wall Name of City Structure: Our cell membrane/cell wall is represented by the air - bubble that surrounds Celltrailia E.T. How it’s related to the cell: The air-bubble acts like the cell membrane in an animal cell because like a cell membrane protects the cell from outside intruders and it holds in the cytoplasm and organelles located in the cell, our air- bubble protects Celltrailia E.T. from space intruders (i.e. asteroids, comets, and “space junk”) and holds in the precious air our citizens need for survival. Just like a cell, without our “cell membrane” everything in Celltrailia would float up and out in to the nothingness of space. Which would be sad.

Cytoplasm Name of city structure: The cytoplasm is represented by the fields and trees that are all around Celltrailia E.T. How it’s related to the cell: The cytoplasm in a cell is a jelly-like substance that contains the organelles of the cell. In Celltrailia E.T., the cytoplasm is fields because the city structures (other organelles) rest on and within the numerous spacious fields in our cell city. The fields take up all of the unused space in our city, along with maintaining a rural look about Celltrailia.

Nucleus Name of city structure: The nucleus of Celltrailia E.T. is represented as the courthouse in the center of the city. How its related to the cell: The courthouse in Celltrailia E.T. is like the nucleus for one because it makes the final verdict. It makes the laws for the city and governs them accordingly; similar to the way the nucleus manages the activity in a cell. Also if one of the city structures or citizens (organelles) steps out of line, it has to answer to the nucleus of our cell city.

Endoplasmic Reticulum (E.R.) Name of city structure: Rough: The rough endoplasmic reticulum is represented in Celltrailia E.T. as a road., known as the ER Highway. Smooth: The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is the police station of Celltrailia E.T. How its related to the cell: The rough endoplasmic reticulum is well represented as the road for our cell city because it is known as the messaging center for the cell. It transports materials throughout the cell to the other organelles, just like a road The police station of Celltrailia E.T. is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum because the job of it is to detoxify the cell of all the waste the cell produces. In turn, the job of the police station is to detoxify the city of all the convicts that cause chaos and wreak havoc.

Ribosome Name of city structure: In Celltrailia E.T., there is an organic factory that produces healthy food and protein. In a cell, this would be the ribosome. This city structure is located directly on the ER highway. How it’s related to the cell: The Celltrailia E.T. organic food factory is related closely to the ribosome in a cell because the ribosome creates proteins for the cell to use while the organic food factory creates give the citizens much needed protein. Because the organic food factory is located right on the ER Highway, all the food can easily be transported directly out and to the citizens.

Lysosome Name of city structure: In Celltrailia E.T., our lysosome is represented by the graveyard. How it’s related to the cell: The graveyard in our cell city is related to the cell in the sense that, like the lysosome in a cell, it holds the dead cell city parts. In a cell when something, such as an organelle dies or gets old, the cell would not be able to properly function if the old/dead cell part was not removed, just like a city. The old/dead cell part becomes a hindrance to the cell if not properly removed, hence the importance of the lysosome

VacuoleVacuole Name of city structure: The vacuole of Celltrailia E.T. is the self- storage units. Each citizens has one but it is also were the city stores its back-up grains and dried vegetables for emergencies. How it’s related to the cell: The vacuole is the “self-storage” unit for the cell and holds the water, nutrients, and wastes for the cell. The way the self-storage in Celltrailia E.T. works is that the citizens can put their necessities (water), valuables (nutrients), and junk (wastes) in the self- storage unit. The city has a back-up supply of nutrients (grains, vegetables, etc.) stored in the storage center for a food crisis, which is similar to the way the cell stores extra nutrients in the vacuole.

Golgi Body Name of the city structure: The Golgi Body is represented as the O.S.P.S. (Outer Space Postal Services) of Celltrailia E.T. How it’s related to the cell: We chose to make the Golgi Body of our cell city a O.S.P. S. truck because the Golgi Body is the packaging center for the cell. Traveling along the ER Highway the O.S.P.S. can deliver packaged goods throughout the cell city, identical to the way the Golgi Body packages vesicles (a small enclosed sac that is used to transport substances throughout the cell) ad collaborates with the rough ER and sends them all over the cell. Remember: If it fits it ships for a low flat rate!!

Mitochondria Name of the city structure: In Celltrailia E.T. the Gatorade Factory is our mitochondria or “power house”. How it’s related to the cell: In a plant or animal cell, the mitochondria provides the cell with energy to fulfill its activities, similar to the way the Gatorade Factory provides the citizens with a high- energy drink that enables them to easily have the energy to participate in activities such as sports. Also with the added energy the working citizens can perform their job to the best of their abilities, helping Celltrailia E.T. to operate at its high standards.

Chloroplast Name of the city structure: In Celltrailia E.T., our chloroplast city structure is a restaurant call Solar Food. How It’s related to the cell: Celltrailia E..T.‘s restaurant Solar Food is related to the chloroplast in a plant cell because like chloroplast captures the sunlight and uses it to produce food for the cell, Solar Food runs solely on solar panels to generate the energy required to make the food.

Nuclear Membrane Name of the city structure: The nuclear membrane is the iron gate surrounding the courthouse. How it’s related to the cell: The iron gate surrounding the perimeter of the courthouse in Celltrailia E.T. is similar to the nuclear membrane surround the nucleus in a cell because it is an extra precaution against unwanted intruders. In a cell the nucleus is the most important part of the cell because it is the “brain” and if is messed with it will affect the entire cell. In Celltrailia if the courthouse is tampered with, it will stop creating and enforcing laws and the whole cell city would be corrupted.

THE END!!!
