DIRECTIONS Open your textbook to the assigned page Read the question and browse the textbook to locate information that will help you answer the question Answer the question on the chart in note format Review the information in the slides and add any missing information

Question 1 Why did Japan want to expand their territory?

Japanese Imperialism In the 1930s, Japan fell under Military Rule due to the Great Depression The Military took power but kept the Emperor as the symbol of state power Militarists wanted to solve economic problems by foreign expansion Wanted an empire to include China, and South Pacific Wanted room for growing population, sources of raw materials, and new markets

Question 2 What actions did Japan take to reach its foreign policy goals and how did western nations react?

Japanese Invasions In 1931- Japanese invade Northern Chinese province of Manchuria and set up a puppet government This was the first direct challenge to the League of Nations League condemned Japan’s actions but had no power to enforce decisions Japan withdraws from L.O.N in 1933 In 1937- Japan invades China Rape of Nanking –Japanese troops kill tens of thousands of captured soldiers and civilians in the Chinese city of Nanking (Nanjing) and raped over 10,000 women

Questions 3 and 4 How did Italy attempt to build an empire? What did western democracies do in response to Mussolini’s Actions?

Italian Fascist Expansion Mussolini wanted to recreate an empire like that of Ancient Rome Wanted to solve economic problems by expanding territory for markets and raw materials Turned his sights on Africa as source of expansion

Mussolini Attacks Ethiopia L.O.N.’s failure to stop Japan encourages Mussolini to plan his own aggression Wanted an African empire like Britain and France Ethiopia was one of only four independent African Nations- defeated Italians in 1890 Mussolini wanted to avenge defeat Invades in 1935- L.O.N. condemns Mussolini but does nothing to help Haile Selassie of Ethiopia despite his warnings Britain continued to allow Mussolini’s troops through the Suez Canal – hoped to avoid conflict with Italy and keep peace in Europe

Question 5 How did Hitler plan on Building an Empire?

Nazi Germany’s Expansion Hitler had promised to undo the Treaty of Versailles Wanted more land for Germany’s growing population Wanted to control Europe’s raw materials and markets Wanted to regain lost territory

Notebook Activity Create a cartoon depicting Germany, Italy and Japan’s desire for more land. You could use characters (Hitler, Mussolini, etc.) or symbols (swastika, fascia, etc.) to depict the aggressors of the 1930s. You may also want to use maps (Example: Japan grabbing land from China). Include a creative title for your cartoon and a caption.
