Fitting Square Pegs Into Round Holes Reconciling Chapter 9 netLibrary Records With the LCRI 1.11A Robert Bothmann Special Formats Cataloguing Coordinator University of Minnesota, Twin Cities ©2000 OLAC/MOUG 2000 Seattle Poster Session 14 October 2000

Core E-book Collection MINITEXMINITEX signed agreement with NetLibrary for 1500 titles to create a core collection for the consortium Requests consortia members to purchase additional netLibrary titles for use of the core collection University Libraries University Libraries purchased an initial 100 netLibrary titles Plans continue to work acquisition of e-books into workflow Becomes part of the University’s digital library initiatives

MINITEX Objectives To provide access to a group of electronic books that can be searched by libraries and users and viewed for reference, information, or general interest. To raise awareness of the advent of electronic books that will be appearing in OPACs soon to join electronic journals.

The OPAC & the E-Book Initial review showed 83% of the e-book titles are already owned in print by the University of Minnesota Libraries Most of the National Academy Press titles are already available as e-books on the NAP web site Should we use one record in the catalogue, or two records? Concern about presentation of e-books in OPAC

The OCLC/netLibrary MARC Record MINITEX to purchase MARC records for use by consortia members University Libraries examine the MARC records Records were created following AACR2 Chapter 9 rules University Libraries prefer records to be similar to microform cataloguing NetLibrary MARC record is compared to a mock- up of a record modeled on LCRI 1.11ALCRI 1.11A

Chapter 9 netLibrary Records Use of subfield 'z' for LCCN and ISBN Use of 256 field in place of Area 5 Physical description Note referencing print publication Use of 776 providing descriptive information about the print edition

Original NetLibrary Record OCLC: Rec stat: c Entered: Replaced: Used: Type: a ELvl: L Srce: d Audn: Ctrl: Lang: eng BLvl: m Form: s Conf: 0 Biog: MRec: Ctry: cou Cont: b GPub: LitF: 0 Indx: 1 Desc: a Ills: Fest: 0 DtSt: s Dates: 1999, |z N$T |c N$T |d OCL [m d ] c |b r |d c |e n (electronic bk.) |z HF |b.A Anderson, Kristin Tales of knock your socks off service |h [computer file] : |b inspiring stories of outstanding customer service / |c by Kristin Anderson and Ron Zemke Computer data Boulder, Colo. : |b NetLibrary, |c Mode of access: World Wide Web Title from title screen Originally published in paper format in 1998 by AMACOM Customer services |z United States |x Case studies Consumer satisfaction |z United States |x Case studies Zemke, Ron NetLibrary, Inc Anderson, Kristin. |t Tales of knock your socks off service. |d New York : AMACOM, |h xiv, 193 p. : ill. ; 23 cm. |w (OCoLC) |3 Display record |u

Decisions netLibrary records were not suitable for OPAC UL would rather be consistent with past cataloguing practices Cataloguing of e-books will follow this method: True reproductions when the print is already owned: Delineate details of the reproduction on the record for the original True reproductions of print items when the print is not owned: the Libraries will follow LCRI 1.11A draft revision For titles which are not true reproductions unique records will be created.

Visual Basic Macro Cataloguing Immediate cataloguing of all 1500 titles requested MACRO appends MARC 530 & 856 fields to print records MACRO exports needed records from OCLC via Passport MACRO rewrites Chapter 9 based MARC records to match LCRI

Public Awareness This Poster Session! Announcement in the Fall 2000 Digital Library News Notification to library staff Announcement to netLibrary of records added to OPAC and the creation of 16 original records not available at the point of cataloguing

What is netLibrary doing? New records apply basics of LCRI 1.11A Old records re-catalogued in August/September to match new LCRI method Records are templates designed to cover variations in content from added multimedia

The netLibrary practice for LCRI 1.11A OCLC: Rec stat: c Entered: Replaced: Used: Type: a ELvl: L Srce: d Audn: Ctrl: Lang: eng BLvl: m Form: s Conf: 0 Biog: MRec: Ctry: nyu Cont: GPub: LitF: 0 Indx: 1 Desc: a Ills: a Fest: 0 DtSt: s Dates: 2000, |z N$T |c N$T |d OCL [m u ] c |b r |d c |e n X (electronic bk.) : |c $ |z HF |b.R /00285/46 | Rosen, Anita The E-commerce question and answer book |h [computer file] : |b a survival guide for business managers / |c Anita Rosen New York, N.Y. : |b AMACOM, |c c xiv, 210 p. : |b ill. ; |c 23 cm Includes index Electronic reproduction. |b Boulder, Colo. : |c NetLibrary, |d |n Available via the World Wide Web. |n Available in multiple electronic file formats. |n Access may be limited to NetLibrary affiliated libraries Electronic commerce Electronic books. |2 lcsh NetLibrary, Inc |c Original |w (DLC) |w (OCoLC) |3 Bibliographic record display |u |z An electronic book accessible through the World Wide Web; click for information

Implications for the Future Cataloguing policy fits the present needs of the University Libraries Other institutions may have different needs requiring separate records, like consortia and union catalogues Acquisition method may limit cataloguing options Will additional media integrated in the resource create the need for alternative cataloguing?
