Quick Write  Chalk Talk  Silent conversation using only writing.  Anyone may add to the chalk talk, as they please.  You can add new ideas in word or symbol form as well as comment on the ideas of others simply by drawing a connecting line, etc., to the comment. 1. What are some causes for war? (WHY) 2. Who/What is to blame? 3. Are humans violent by nature? Or is violence learned from society?

Chapter 2 – Fire on the Mountain  Ralph calls another meeting by blowing on the conch.  They are on an island with no grown ups  Jack insists on having an army of hunters and begins talking excitedly about the piglet.  Ralph lays down some rules:  Must hold the conch shell to speak.  Conch to symbolize the organization of society and the rules that such a society must uphold  They speak excitedly about their new temporary home, how it is a "good island.”  Then, a littlun with a large birthmark on his face steps forward to speak.  He tells of a "beastie. It looked like a snake and is the first manifestation of the Beast.  Ralph doesn't think a beast could live on a small island, but he feels himself "facing something ungraspable."  Jack says his hunters will kill the beast if, indeed, it does exist.

Chapter 2 – Fire on the Mountain  Ralph introduces another prevailing symbol of the novel: the signal fire.  Ralph - Fire must be maintained to aid in their rescue.  The children become excited and rush off to the summit to see if they can complete such a task.  Jack, against Piggy's protest, grabs his specs to light the fire with.  The group of hunters are divided up to take shifts keeping the fire going.  The sparks from the now-dead fire have ignited half the forest below the mountain.  Piggy speaks out against the group's immaturity; they don't even know how many kids are on the island.  Piggy asks where the boy with the birthmark is.  He has been killed by the fire. He is the first to die and the boys can only stare at the fire, marveling with horror at what they have done.

Portfolio #1 “Lord of the Double Entendre” Some authors have mastered the art of saying much in few words. This is certainly true In William Golding’s case; his Nobel Prize winning novel entitled Lord of the Flies presents a group of young boys stranded on an island, but he skillfully embeds some larger issues for his perceptive readers to ponder. When the main character, Ralph, says “People don’t help much,” Golding not only develops the conflict brewing with Jack, a rival boy on the island, but he suggests that “people were never quite what you thought they were.” Intuitive readers begin to think about how helpful or hurtful humans can be and how our outer appearance masks a different reality within. … (conclude with a clincher sentence) Instructions: In a formal paragraph explain the double entendre (two intended meanings) in Ralph’s statement of “People don’t help much.” Use a carefully crafted paragraph that is proofread and fixed.

Assessment  Your paragraph will be marked out of 6 using the Ministry of Education’s 6 point writing scale.
