Notes cover, Empresarios and Colonization of Texas Mexican Texas ( )

Vocabulary Immigration- introduction of new people into a habitat or population. Militia- military force made up of ordinary people or citizens. Slavery- to forcefully subject someone to labor without paying them. In Texas African Americans were considered slaves.

New Government In March 1823, emperor Iturbide was dethroned and the Mexican people established a new form of Government. The people who formed the new government were called Federalists because they believed in sharing power between the states and the national government. The people who opposed the Federalists were called the Centralists, because they believed that power should be controlled by the National government of Mexico City.

Mexican Colonization Law 1). No one could receive more than 48,708 acres of land; 2). No colony could be established without the permission of the Mexican Government.3). Only those who intended to live in Texas could receive land contracts. Each Empresario could receive 23,000 acres of land for every 100 colonists they brought into Texas. Contracts lasted six years. Most successful Empresario was Stephen F. Austin, he successfully settled 1200 families and his colony was later called Bastrop. One reason he had such great success was that he settled in the Great Plains and took advantage of the crops that grows there.

Female Leader Jane Long- was raised by her sister from the time she was young she later married Doctor James Long and together they occupied the Bolivar Peninsula to take it away from the Spanish. After James was killed, Jane took her three kids and followed S.F. Austin to Texas. She was one of “The Old Three Hundred,” and became the first Angelo Woman to enter Texas. She also bought and sold land and raised cattle, as well as helped many slaves. She was later named the “Mother of Texas.”

Life in Colonies In 1824 San Felipe de Austin becomes the capital of the colonies. Despite the fact Women worked alongside their husbands, life was very difficult for them. Women could not vote, hold public office or serve on a jury. African American Slaves had a much harder life, they worked long hours without pay and without respect, and families were split up because of slave sales. In 1829, Thomas J. Pilgram opened the first school in the new town of San Felipe de Austin. By 1830 nearly every town in the new settlements had a Teacher.

Different Cultures come to Texas By 1825 there were more than 3,000 people of Mexican ancestry; many Whites from the U.S. came to Texas for a new start. There were at least 2,000 African Americans in Texas that were free. The settlers complied with the new Mexican laws at first, and they liked being Catholic.
