Capstone Day 3 Working Session

Why are we doing this?? Capstone –Opportunity to reflect on achievements and growth as an educator CognitivelyPedagogicallyMorally –Deliberative thinking on 10 INTASC standards Employment –Important to have though some will not want

The Actual Product: Substantive Issues Purpose –Show achievements and growth (pedagogically, cognitively, morally) –Snapshot of who you are as an educator

“Moral” Beyond right and wrong Consider how you achieve “desirable ends” –Values –Beliefs –Ways of interacting Consider “In what ways is teaching a moral activity?” Look especially at Standard #9

INTASC Standard 9 The teacher is a reflective practitioner who uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (students, families, and other professionals in the learning community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner.

The Actual Product: Substantive Issues Teaching Philosophy –Evident throughout –Thesis statement –Aligned –Use actual words, phrases from philosophy –Consider

The Actual Product: Substantive Issues Social Justice –Must be addressed somewhere, imbedded or separate section. –First think about what “social justice” means. How have your thoughts and/or practices changed as a result of your program? How do you think your thoughts and/or practices will continue to change? How does social justice play out with individuals? with groups? with policies and organizational structures?

The Actual Product: Substantive Issues Reflections –At least 1 paragraph –Address: Interpretation of standard (ENTIRE standard) Why artifact chosen How artifact represents the standard How artifact represents you as beginning teacher (achievements and growth) What you would do differently (optional) –Keep in mind teaching philosophy

Common Critiques Standard 1: Learner Development –Focusing on cognitive learning only Standard 2: Learning Differences –Taking narrow view of difference: learning styles or race Standard 4: Content Knowledge –Only commenting on your own content knowledge and not how you make it meaningful for students

Common Critiques Standard 6: Assessment –Thinking of assessment as tests or only summative assessments Standard 7: Planning –Think beyond just lesson plans –Good to incorporate PA or content area standards

The Actual Product: Substantive Issues Artifacts –Select wisely –Variety of types –No more than 5 per standard –Think about ways to show cohesiveness

The Actual Product: Substantive Issues Future Goals –Be substantive and thoughtful. –Compare “ I want to be a better teacher.” “I want to work in a high school with a strong math department.” “I need to continue to develop new strategies to reach my students and use multiple forms of media in my classroom to actively engage students in communication. I plan to improve in this area by…”

The Actual Product: Substantive Issues Other Issues –Be succinct yet thorough and thoughtful –Can include extra sections or information as appropriate –Look at rubric carefully hussler/EDU_7321/Rubric.htm hussler/EDU_7321/Rubric.htm –CHECK SPELLING! This is a professional document.

The Actual Product: Technical Issues Links work Capitalize on technology Ease of navigation Call Taskstream if issues UNIT can help with digitizing, scanning, etc. Call early!!
